I think this is why police refuse to loudly and publicly toss ICE under the bus--even though they would be heralded as heroes. Because the next step after ICE is gone is setting firm boundaries so that cops can no longer do in "private" what ICE did publicly.

Private = not in white neighborhoods
People keep coming out and responding to ICE posts with “these aren’t like regular Law Enforcement who serve and protect, these guys are scum who behave like the US people are the enemy” and then go silent when you’re like “anybody who uses tanks and tear gas on peaceful protesters is bad.”

One basic pattern here is that DHS officials are engaging in violence simply because they are irritated at citizens protesting them. There is no plausible threat of violence here. He just wants to inflict pain, and believes there will be no penalty for doing so.
Big clash this afternoon between DHS agents and protesters in a residential street in Minneapolis, following a DHS agent hitting another vehicle. Tear gas was deployed in people’s yards and agents pepper prayed people.

Hollywood trained people to think "no FBI cooperation = no case." Wrong. Under the rules of evidence, eyewitness testimony is proof. Video authenticated under oath is proof. Minnesota has both. You don't need a ballistics report when multiple witnesses watched an ICE agent shoot a woman in the face.

Abolish and prosecute ICE. They did a murder in broad daylight today. Imagine what they're doing in the closed facilities we're somehow not even allowed to see.

Remembering today that having your heart broken is a necessary step on the path to becoming fully human. Whichever heartbreak is your first, it’s probably critical that a state break your heart so that you can develop a political imagination. If this is your first, I’m sorry and also welcome.

benefiting from white privilege all the same. Conditional whiteness is still whiteness. I've spent my life receiving the unearned benefits of an unequal society - how is it right to then cut and run when it's time to accept the risks that come with it?

See, white people fucked this up to begin with. And yes, I know, for the pedants who will inevitably enter my mentions, I am aware that my grandparents who immigrated here were hardly in a position of institutional power and weren't even considered white. And yet here *I* am,

Like those before it, that insane, vile DHS statement about the Minneapolis shooting isn't about covering anything up. It's performative lying.

They aren't trying to persuade anyone that their agents did nothing wrong. They're trying to project that their agents can get away with anything.

As a rule I'm nuanced on how media affects public perception

Police procedurals make us think law enforcement officers are better than they are and normalize the extrajudicial killings of ordinary people.

I think we should stop making them. And for that to happen you should stop watching them.

If you are anxious and sad about the state of the world, that's fine, and there are plenty of strategies for dealing with that. But I think you already know that drive-by online dooming isn't a strategy. It's selfish and adolescent. It's a contagion that only spreads the worst of you, not the best.

I wish they faced the danger they want us to imagine they do, because we know they are such cowards this would convince them to stay home and choose a different line of work.
Trump and his administration claim that ICE officers face tremendous danger while they're on patrol. However, the data tells an entirely different story.
How dangerous is it really to work for ICE?
According to ICE’s own data, none of its officers have been killed by an immigrant in the agency’s history.

100% this. Their framing implies that these things would be okay if they weren’t so economically damaging. Which… no, absolutely not! Fuck that!
Democrats need to understand that they can just say “It’s insane to threaten Greenland” and “I don’t think ICE should murder Americans in the street” and you don’t need to pretend to link it to the affordability crisis.

Say bad things are bad.

Here's the thing, as an outsider: if they're willing to lie to protect some low-level ICE thug who did an obvious murder of a US Citizen in broad daylight, what the hell are they going to do to pacify Caracas? Or Nuuk? Or Ottawa?

A century or two from now, mealy-mouthed historians will claim that Trump shouldn't be judged by their more advanced moral standards.

That's why it's so important to set the record straight now: as his contemporaries, we recognise his actions are immoral. We condemn him now.
