You can tell a True Wife Guy then by the way he never *tells you* he’s a wife guy. This is really the truest distinction: if you can tell a guy truly loves his wife, then he’s a Wife Guy. If he has to tell you, then he’s a Wife Guy *eye roll*. Anyway, hope this helps 5/5

I don’t think enough people are talking about how, great as it is, Marty Supreme is like 20 minutes too long.

Wife Guy tip of the day: internalize this concept. Your partner’s enemies are your enemies, and it’s important to hate them even more than your partner does. I keep a list of enemies and my wife’s enemies rank highly, and I’ve never met most of them.
I like this. It also fits nicely with my situation--hating my friends' enemies more than my own
My new year's resolution this year, as every year, is to be a more available, supportive friend as well as an increasingly looming, formidable enemy.

This might sound harsh, and judgmental, but if video is your preferred way of getting information about a topic, you’re a fucking moron

I enjoy reading people way more thoughtful than me talk about movies, and @eliasisquith.blog and @coreyatad.com have a good thread going here.
i don't actually think these two reads are incompatible, and in fact the implicit contrast is extra strong because it's Marty who brings it up and coaxes his friend to tell the story, as though he identifies with it. he *wants* to be that guy, and thinks he is.

If I were a parent, my kids would have access to precisely one (1) personal computer screen and it’d be a hulking desktop situated in the family room. If it was good enough for millennials, it’s good enough for zoomers.
Since Australia this month barred children under 16 from using social media, parents around the world have been debating whether similarly tough action is needed in their own countries.

This Will Stencil person falls into the category of people that I have no idea who they are, only that they seem to make people ‘mad enough to post about it’ on the regular. I have no idea what it said, and don’t care, and I invite my friends, for their sake, to take up the flag of indifference.

To me, the movie that absolutely nails this kind of guy perfectly is Red Rocket. The entire time I watched it I was thinking ‘Jesus Christ, this is *redacted*; wtf was I thinking spending so much time with that guy.’
I really enjoyed Marty Supreme, but any time I see a movie with a character like Marty I’m reminded of a friend I had in my 20s and, looking back, holy hell did that guy fucking suck.

I may not have been ‘cool’ but my formative years hanging out in my friends basements, listening to music and just hanging out were great. Getting drunk and setting of M-80s in peoples mailboxes not required.
Not to be ‘that guy’ but just because the OP only had fun doing illegal shit doesn’t mean the only way to have fun is to do illegal shit. I LOL’d when he was like ‘because I had fun getting drunk in the middle of nowhere, drunk driving should be legal.’ How broken are peoples brains, jfc
I have a bunch of intersecting thoughts here but basically 1) excessive alcohol consumption is an urban activity, 2) we shouldn’t legalize drunk driving and 3) we should more heavily penalize parents whose kids abuse alcohol in such a drastic fashion.

All the weddings we used to go to are now being replaced with funerals, and I do not care for it.

I think that this is on the one hand true, but also ask anyone that watched the avatar movie a week from now to recount what they watched and find that ‘relevance’ is itself a bit of a relative term. Juxtapose that with anybody that watched Marty Supreme, and, my friends, they will have thoughts.
Avatar’s cultural relevance discourse is an expression of slop anxiety, the worry that most people don’t actually want something interesting like you do, and you know what? It’s fine if they don’t. Cool stuff still gets made and you get to enjoy it.

Wake Up Dead Man is a great movie, but I most appreciate it for the shots that require other actors to stand next to James Brolin showing precisely how tiny he is.

I mostly liked the year-in-review Press Box episode but David Shoemaker wishing that podcasts were around in Frank Deford's time was completely brutal. I for one am glad we remember Deford for his writing and not as the host of the Frank Deford Show, a video podcast from Spotify and FanDuel.

Inadvertently gone on a Knives Out bender. (Watching two of the movies and inadvertently drinking an entire bottle of wine when I told myself I was just having a glass or two.)
