Powerful elite institution panics and caves in to authoritarianism at the merest threat of trouble, however slight or far-fetched. The story we’ve heard again and again for the past decade.
NEWS --> BBC confirms to me that they did edit a line out of historian @rutgerbregman.com's speech. It called Trump "the most openly corrupt president in US history."

BBC also confirms this was done on the advice of lawyers. So Trump's threats worked.

New piece:

Trump’s Fury at BBC Gets Unnerving Results with Pro-MAGA Edit Stunner
First, British Broadcasting Corporation execs resigned after Trump complained about a segment. Now the BBC edited out a line from a historian that was critical of Trump. Where does this end?

I remember the first weeks of this war, when Russian soldiers filmed themselves raping women and posted that on social media. And now some New York City Conman expects us to go on Spanish beach holidays with these people.

All the supposedly progressive people saying 'Nigel Farage's racism doesn't matter. His fans love it'.

It matters whether the leader of the party leading all the opinion polls is an outright racist. It matters if he called black people 'wogs' and said 'gas them' to Jews. Not everything is a game

The story is unfortunately an exaggeration: rail gauge change is not happening any time soon. But the idea behind Boris's post is entirely correct. We really have to become independent from tinpot dictators and prevent them having leverage over us.
Finland uses “Russia-gauge” rails. They are going to move to European compatible rail gauge for their own resilience.

This is what we should be thinking about for moving to open social away from American platforms: it should come with significant spending commitments & is absolutely necessary.
Finland announces migration of its rail network to international gauge
The Finnish government announces the migration of its rail network from Russian gauge (1,524 mm) to international gauge (1,435 mm) from 2032. The change aims to improve military mobility and regional ...

How it started. How it ended.

Nearly 200,000 Ukrainians in the U.S. risk deportation because DHS has delayed renewing their humanitarian permits since March. Some have self-deported to avoid detention in Latin America or Africa.

This is how the U.S. is treating the refugees of an ally as peace talks hang in the balance.

We're kinda stuck with bad ideas about Europe in Europe. The Merkel doctrine relied on Russia. The Polish alternative relied on a trustworthy United States. Only the French proposed and argued for a Europe as its own thing. But the French are too busy being French to lead us right now.

Am reminded of what one Ukrainian colleague wrote me after the Feb 28 white house debacle:
‘We used to so admire the Americans. They were our great role model. Now look what wimps they really are. So eager to surrender to Russia, but nobody’s even shooting at them. What have we to learn from them?’

The opening of Poland's prime minister, Donald Tusk, in reference to the 28 point paper is quite something.

This is trolling on the most professional level politics can give. It is even questionable whether the US side will be understanding this subtlety. Hilarious!

The last few hours have proven 2 terrible things. First, the US and Russian governments are so close that the US government takes large parts of Russian proposals and passes them off as their own, and second that some people are so desperate to exonerate Trump that they act like this a good thing.

The current mess in DC only signals to Beijing that the US lacks unity, organization, and strategic vision to handle an even larger conflict, as the Pacific region is likely to become. Bombing Iran after Israel's SEAD or running masculine army ads doesn’t compensate for it

Look this whole fake Russian peace plan is pretty ridiculous. But can we agree that Victor Orban INSTANTLY and publicly trying to surrender is legit funny.

Proper 'people are asking questions my "I'm a Russian asset" t shirt has already answered' level funny.

The absurdity of the 28 point paper gets another twist.

US State Deputy Spokesman Tommy Pigott called the bipartisan group of US Senators, including Republican Senator Mike Rounds, liars.

This US administration has completely lost its plot, if it ever existed. Total chaos.

I fully agree, the word "fascism" is losing its dark odor rapidly. Sooner or later some of the authoritarian parties in Europe will openly endorse it. The debates from the interwar period are back: Fascists are rising and portraying themselves as alternatives to rotten and ineffective democracies.

Trump has literally given a deadline to a plan which never even existed. He just read of it in the press, leaked by Russians, and just said:

“Ukrainians have to accept it.”

The level of this incompetence or malice or both is just remarkable.

I'm skeptical that Trump's make Ukraine surrender plan wasn't real.

Trump envoy Witkoff negotiated it, details and threats to Ukraine were public for multiple days, and Rubio didn't dispute it then, only after the plan got a bad reception and rejected by Europe.

Look like attempting to save face.
Republican Senator Mike Rounds said Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a call to senators, confirmed the so-called 28-point “peace plan” was actually a Russian wishlist and is “not the administration’s position”. Nor is there any threat to cut off weapons or intelligence to Ukraine.
