This is honestly an extremely rose tinted view on political ads in history, 100 years ago people were depicted opposing ideologies as disheveled weirdos and war propaganda drew germany as a giant ape who'd steal american women.
One of the reasons I think we need a much heavier emphasis on humanities and the literary canon in American K-12 education is so we can attempt to recover a common political vernacular that's based in, like, Biblical allegory and Enlightenment thought instead of incel memes.

cop is the only job in the world where if someone points out they're actually bad at their ostensible job, it's considered an implicit argument for giving them all raises
The thesis of the article is that because American cops are so terrible at solving murder (and getting much much worse than they used to be), "experts" believe the U.S. must spend massively more money on hiring police and surveillance.

an underrated element of vice signaling, I think, is that it gives people a justification never to better themselves. If the President is a serial liar and cheat and constantly rewarded for it, why should you have to be any better than him?
I used to think of vice signaling as a minor point about political communication. now I wonder if we need to develop it as a core aspect of political theory, at least as far as the Americas are concerned
Laughing in front of cages designed to hold migrants and refugees, many of whom came to this country fleeing extreme violence and poverty, and hoping to raise their children in a more compassionate country. And many of whom followed all the legal procedures to enter the country.
