If you're ultra wealthy and you need everyone to know it, a mega-yacht won't cut it any more. You need to visibly act out in ways that prove you can treat people like garbage, you can take contradictory positions and spew things that don't make any sense, and still be a part of society.

Its less a case of "dems gratuitously abandoning trans folks" than "dems dont want to pick a fight over funding the military over a small if shitty part of the bill." Im not happy about it either but we shouldn't overstate stuff like this.
