There are thousands of things like this in tech. Why is search bad in Gmail. Why does Bluetooth suck. Why are most streaming apps bad. Why is file transfer still annoying. Every day it feels like I've got random issues with tech stuff while these companies sink billions into AI
if microsoft just made outlook search not suck they'd see triple the productivity gains of any AI integration

NEW: The first two years of Massachusetts' millionaire tax has raised $3 billion more than expected.

And rather than driving the rich away, IPS researchers found that the number of millionaires has *increased.*

Tax the rich. Greg Ryan in @bloomberg.com:
Millionaire Tax That Inspired Mamdani Fuels $5.7 Billion Haul in Massachusetts
A millionaire levy in Massachusetts that New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani holds up as a model for taxing the rich has generated $3 billion more in revenue than expected without forcing...

Some @inbedwiththeright.bsky.social updates since I’ve not been on here very much (book manuscript home stretch): we just released this episode on spousal rape laws with the amazing @sarahweinman.com! It’s admittedly a dark topic, but please check it out, if you feel up to it!

when RWers say "grooming" they mean "threatening my patriarchal sexual authority, corrupting my property, damaging my goods." they don't actually mean anything to do with sexual abuse, which they see as perfectly permissible under the right circumstances.

This sounds reasonable but is 100% wrong. Whether you or agree or disagree with a study is completely immaterial. What matters is whether the study was conducted properly and generates valid results. And it's impolitic to say but it's true: you have to have some level of expertise to judge that.
JD Vance: "Science as practiced in its best form is that if you disagree with it, then you ought to criticize it and you ought to argue against it."

I'm pivoting so hard on the humanoid robotics trend... it's not actually an absurd waste of capital and brainpower that will never live up to the relentless hype, I was wrong about that, it's a very real and serious field that our tech oligarchs should pour all of their money into
Joke of the day from Moscow: Russia tried to unveil its first humanoid AI robot, Aidol. Key word: tried. The robot collapsed during its debut, forcing organizers to cut the presentation short. Their rushed attempt to lift the prop only made things worse.

Found the tweet that Joyce Carol Oates bodied Elon Musk with and it's so beautiful in its eloquent, simple take down. So much so he's crashing out trying to prove he reads books now. Put this in the Louvre.

Yes. The liberal democracy movement is more significant than a few members of the Democratic caucus. The movement’s strength lies in tens of millions across the nation. Those many millions can (and will) attrit the confused & conflicted from the caucus in the course of their grassroots work.

The leader of the opposition party is supposed to ensure that the opposition speaks with a unified message.

Chuck Schumer failed yet again at that. Why is he still in his role?

Asking my Senators to vote for new leadership; either Chuck Schumer cannot whip votes, in which case he's useless, or he is fine giving up leverage for nothing, in which case he's worthless.

BREAKING: The First Circuit denies DOJ’s stay request in the SNAP case, refusing to stay the Nov. 6 enforcement order.

Justice Jackson’s 48-hour clock started just before midnight Sunday, meaning the administrative stay she issued Friday ends at the end of the day Tuesday.

Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.

Look. Invading our own country is about as straightforward a case as you can have for impeachment. The GOP abandoning the Constitution is kind of the only story there is and it gets no coverage.
Guys. I just had a crazy idea. What if the President DIDN’T deploy troops in American cities. Just a thought. Have we tried that before?

Immergut deposed Monica Lewinsky for Ken Starr, was a US attorney under Bush, and was appointed to the bench by Trump during his first term. This is not some left-wing judge.
Immergut: I'm handling this on expedited basis, but defendants haven't provided new info.

SHE RULES FROM THE BENCH: I grant the plaintiffs motion for a second TRO based on reasons stated in previous order...

I am halfway through Monster: Ed Gein and so far I think this series is not very good but Charlie Hunnam and Suzanna Son are great. This is probably one of Charlie Hunnam's best performances if not THE best. (One very minor thing is that he finally masters an American accent btw.)

Blech I can't be bothered to read Christine Brennan re: WNBA. We have SO MANY other very good, knowledgeable reporters providing coverage that is both complete & nuanced, who actually LIKE the sport, KNOW the sport + league history, and respect the players & coaches. Nobody needs Brennan up in here.

You don't understand the difference between government, movement, and regime.
If we were living under fascism, none of you would be here daring to post things. You'd be erasing your social media accounts and keeping your head down; you'd know that peacocking your faux-bravery on a network would expose you to being disappeared.
You have no idea what "fascism" really means.
the regime is zip tying toddlers and ripping them away from their mothers unclothed... calling it fascism upsets this neo-con.

Imagine defending LLMs because you half-grasped that in a lot of science fiction narratives the robots/AIs **represent** oppressed human minorities, but failing to understand that the lesson was supposed to be NOT TO CONTINUE TO OPPRESS, MARGINALIZE AND DEVALUE HUMAN BEINGS using bullshit like LLMs.
