I've never seen a population more united. If people can hold onto that unity, if people can accept that different people will have different ways of confronting fascism, if we can remind NGOs and orgs that they can join but not control the resistance, then, well, people here will write history.

This may be the biggest trigger for despair, in all the world's goings on. Rojava is truly democratic and sets such a great example for how people can manage a society together. If you were looking for hope, they are it. But, they are outgunned and Syria's new govt is letting them be annihilated.
After the failure of negotiations in Damascus, a general mobilization has begun in Rojava. Youth from northern Kurdistan appear To have crossed the border to join the defence. it feels like 2014 again, complete with horrific executions of SDF prisoners.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

Can we talk about acculturated sadism - being groomed by cultural forces to enjoy/get excited about other people being suffering, being hurt, or being killed?
The lifting up of the notion that "bad" people deserve "punishment" and that we should feel good when it happens. Acculturated sadism.
