I have so much respect for the @nwslplayers.bsky.social but to me this misses the point. The issue isn't that the attacks on specific NWSL players are factually incorrect (they are); it's that the hysteria and bigotry around trans, intersex, and gender nonconforming athletes hurts all women

I’ve also been stuck on the fact that Sarah Gorden apologized for another player’s comments, and is the only one to do so — despite it not being her fault in the slightest. I still hope we see public support of her from the league itself, as she is also targeted.

Including that statement is likely just in response to the general fake hysteria about an influx of trans athletes, which is well, fake, but it definitely doesn’t really give inclusive or affirmative which is an unfortunate byproduct to engaging with this crowd directly.
the thing is… there’s a really uncharitable way to read this statement despite I’m sure the intent being the opposite.

It’s interesting to see how the responses today have been framed, whether it’s focusing on a player’s exceptional talent, or that if they were assigned female at birth.

No one in this league should be subject to transphobic hate because transphobia is based on hateful rhetoric and trash science.

The NWSL will be in a much stronger position if it reminds people that transphobic attacks on some players are bad for all players.

If you care about women’s sports, you’ll keep the creepy genital testing obsessives and the racists out.

Giving them any space makes everyone less safe.

Protect their players then I’ll take them seriously. As of now they continue to be a joke and only do things when they are bullied to do so.

This season has seen too much where players have quite literally have not been protected by the BARE minimum. I don’t wanna hear anything about you stand with players when you forced players to continue a game where their colleague died on the field and was brought back. Played in conditions (cont)

NWSL has been standing still and hoping no one notices, and in all likelihood a Black player who stood up for others — in the absence of proper moral leadership from the league — is going to have the right-wing rage machine aimed directly at her.

And everyone saw it coming.
It might seem easy to stand still and hope no one notices during these particularly hellish times, but NWSL is not in a position to do that without putting human beings in danger.

Also as several colleagues have noted, the photo choice here is absolutely intentional and points in a grim direction.
Deeply disappointed in Liz Eddy here, who I've always liked and respected. A reminder that we have a lot of work to do when it comes to educating the public about why trans inclusion isn't just morally correct, but competitively sound share.google/Gjf9a1Sl01eL...

"Faces teammates' rebuke" says Fox News of Elizabeth Eddy.

This is why ownership's initial statement—which compelled Sarah Gorden and the players to issue their own response—was a profound act of moral cowardice. Now, Gorden and her teammates are in the crosshairs. Fuck that.
We had some more thoughts about #AngelCityFC in the wake of Sarah Gorden's statement yesterday.

And THIS is why I said at least every captain needed to speak and be unified. Guess who is gonna get the hate from the Fox News crowd now? Sarah Gorden, that's who. The only Black captain. Okay, going back to work now.
Fox News has picked up Elizabeth Eddy’s column, and the response from the Angel City players.

I’m hearing Eddy will appear on Fox and Friends tomorrow morning.

Started in this league as a player. Now I stand in it as a leader. With that comes the responsibility to champion what makes this league and game special.

P, you’re exactly what makes our space special. Wherever your path takes you, whatever kit you wear, know this: we’ve got your back. 💪

I know what I said earlier, but one agenda I do have is you will never make me hate Sarah Gorden. Only Black captain in the league, BTW. In 2025.

For all of the ups and downs ACFC as an organization puts me through as a fan, I feel proud to support a group of players who are willing to stand up for what's right. Proud of Sarah Gorden and Angelina Anderson for their leadership in this moment.
Unfortunately, I’m not able to post the video on here as there is a 3 minute limit on this app, but here is the link to ACFC Captain Sarah Gorden and Angelina Anderson’s statements in today’s press conference.

In addition to any moral or competitive arguments,

1. This is a fake problem. There aren't any trans women in NWSL. There aren't any trans women in the immediate pipeline that I'm aware of.

2. Using Banda for the cover photo here is obviously just extremely racist.

Now, you don’t need to spend a decade making the most thoroughly researched and informative podcast on the subject to tell you that people who want gender testing in the NWSL are morally creepy and scientifically wrong, but it just so happens someone already did:

I would also like to shout from the roof tops that this anti-trans panic and propaganda disproportionally affects Black and brown women
They want all the African players out of the league because they're racist. And when that's done, they'll go after the rest of the Black players. Because they're all fucking racist.

This is some bullshit on SEVERAL different levels. It conveniently ignores the former openly trans NWSL players because it doesn’t fit the anti-trans/“save women’s sports” propaganda and fuels the hatred towards Black women who play in the NWSL (it wasn’t just Banda who was targeted by those people)

So much impresses me about Press and how she handles herself, but it was really big of her to say the quiet part out loud in her speech.

Her time in LA, on the pitch, didn’t go how anyone had expected or wanted. Still, she’s a huge part of Angel City’s history and created plenty of big moments.
