A break in a pipe – carrying sewage from Dulles to a water treatment plant in D.C. – led to more than 200 million gallons of sewage flowing directly into the Potomac River north of the city. One of the largest environmental disasters of its kind: 51st.news/potomac-sewa...
What you need to know about the big sewage spill in the Potomac
The spill is now largely contained, but people are still warned to avoid contact with the river.

New from me on @us.theguardian.com: sources tell me a host of changes are coming to MLS Season Pass - cuts in Spanish language talent & programming, and about half of the English-language matches will be produced overseas.

Much more right here: www.theguardian.com/football/202...
MLS to cut half of Spanish-language broadcast talent on Apple TV, according to sources
The league will send about half its live games to be produced in London, as MLS 360’s Spanish edition will cease production

It's not the season until I've clicked a Zoom link for something that is over 1 day from actually happening.

So, having spent 5 minutes waiting for a Spirit presser to start when it's 24 hours and 10 minutes before it actually begins, congrats! The 2026 NWSL season has begun.

Dunn having to play left back was often framed by fans as coaches being disrespectful to her, but I think it was the opposite. The team had 6 or 7 S-tier talents, and USWNT managers wanted to get all of them on the field at the same time. The other ones weren't good enough to play LB. Dunn was.

There are 2 plays I think of first when I think of Crystal Dunn.

The first is a pass that I'm still waiting for someone in NWSL to match: this outside-the-foot, bending pass on the dubious FieldTurf at Sahlen's Stadium to set Diana Matheson up for a goal.

Not much context needed, it's just magic.

What's going wrong with Maryland wbb is not enough of you are rooting for them or for me, a person who just wants them to win 100% of their basketball games for the rest of my life

How do you add tactical context to football data?

For futi, it starts with a phase of play model.

Some of your fave high impact players might not officially be High Impact Players… and how that's part of the problem 📈

Sam sat down with the @nwslplayers.bsky.social's Tori Huster to discuss concerns around the High Impact Rule and its criteria.

Gotham produced 1.86 xG in 300 minutes in the playoffs last season.

It's an article rather than a post, but they're built to be antagonists rather than protagonists. That doesn't make them villains, but it does make them vulnerable when a team says "no YOU have the ball" like Corinthians did.
Among the ways to lose a knockout game of soccer:

Possession: Gotham 68.4%, Corinthians 31.6

xG: Gotham 1.22, Corinthians 0.69

Total shots: Gotham 20, Corinthians 9

Shots off target: Gotham 13, Corinthians 4

Shots blocked: Gotham 6, Corinthians 3

Shots on target: Corinthians 2, Gotham 1

All I’ve been told so far is Lavelle “left the game with a head injury.” No further details at this time.
Most importantly, asking for updates on Rose Lavelle. Will update if I get any info.

Everyone's gonna gesture at AKB, but watch how Howell & McCaskill deal with Andressa Alves' sacrificial run. IMO Howell shouldn't be making a hand-off here, McCaskill is reacting as the ball's being struck. That opens the window for the pass.
It was one of the only bits of defending GFC had to do and... welp

Wasn't really a coin flip I don't think (haven't seen xG figures yet for today but I'd expect a healthy Bats edge), but sometimes the rent comes due.
Two things can be true:

1. Gotham has Esther, Lavelle, Shaw, and Purce, you're always at risk for their higher conversion rate settling a coin-flip game.

2. Shouldn't Gotham be in far fewer coin-flip games, seeing as how they have the players they have?
Gotham scored off their biggest chance of the match, fairly consistent with their season. A 54% conversion rate on great chances is probably unsustainable, but Gotham's finishing can stay bonkers longer than you can stay solvent.

"We'll probably play three minutes due to that stoppage..."

(referee blows in the exact cadence for full time)

"Well! That is it!"

(referee decides to play on anyway???)

Your NWSL watchers who also follow MLS know the long, brutal history of strong teams not being prepared for knockout tournament play against a motivated opponent in January.

But usually said opponent is at least in-season. Corinthians last played on Dec. 14.

Now it's official - Uniqlo are the new equipment partner of the #JLeague, replacing Adidas. They'll be providing clothing for referees as well as uniforms for the All-Star Game in June.

Fans will also be able to create their own custom J.League merch through the UTme! platform from Feb. 6.

A thing Rodman has always understood is how the pressure cooker that is an NWSL contender or (especially) the USWNT has to also have fun. The cellys and pre-game photo plans serve a purpose.

Talked to her back in 2024 about how Emma Hayes was on the same wavelength from the jump.
