Meta: I have kept a public Mastodon account since leaving the other place, and this hasn't resulted in the level of drama that a public Twitter account did. Twitter kept turning my life upside down and never made me any money, so I limit social media because I don't have time for that.

Yes, conservatives in Brazil are just as unhinged as those here in the US. The critical difference is Brazil has a modern democratic constitution so Bolsonaro was sentenced to prison, locked up and barred from office, not elected to a second term and given impunity. 🎁:

Hear me out, what if taking a loan against securities was a taxable event, automatic mark to market, and whatever applicable capital gains tax (based on length of time securities were held) applied?

This doesn't require a wealth tax. It just takes away the "buy, borrow, die" tax dodge.

It's really simple, and I'm not sure why we're dancing around the issue: Democrats are being removed from voter rolls.

OK, Republicans: The second we have power back, we're doing it back to you. Let's see how you like it.

This piece is a great illustration of how the long-term effect of Trump’s destruction of US institutions won’t be felt in a dramatic market collapse, but rather in permanently worse economic conditions, and lower prosperity.

My immediate reaction to this is that I can't believe this is so cheap. If you want to commit financial crimes with impunity in China, it'll cost you much more than $1 million - and there's some stuff you still won't be able to get away with, because it'd threaten the legitimacy of the regime.

The best people in the world at cybersecurity are not right wing ideological purists. Don't expect the federal government to show up with anything useful in this space. Rather than the industry looking to the US for leadership, it's time for international standards organizations to take over.

Attacking the right to vote is something that is common in autocratic regimes like the United States of America.
NEW: Ohio has just restricted mail voting, banning the so-called 'grace period' that allows mail ballots to come in the day after Election Day as long as they've been postmarked in time.

This is likely to lead to thousands of Dem-leaning ballots to be rejected.

Ohio is following Trump's demands.

Ohio is the fourth GOP-run state this year to ban ballots that are postmarked by Election Day but arrive after. A Supreme Court case could force that policy nationwide next year.
