I’m disappointed to hear Commissioner Haer’s comments challenging the use of land acknowledgements. These acknowledgements are not performative to me. They are one small daily practice that flows from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and from the principles of UNDRIP.

Some breaking news: in a special Vancouver Police Board meeting only announced over the weekend, the police board has requested a $50 million increase to their budget for 2026.

This comes as other departments across the city are trying to cut staff to ensure a property tax freeze for next year.

Ken Sim and ABC are bringing ~$120m in cuts to community centres, parks, and public services.

On Thursday, City Council is voting on a $17m retroactive boost to the 2025 police budget.

Now the Police Board is asking for another extra $50 million in 2026.

“The optics are, oh, the police get everything they want.”

Here’s my story on the Vancouver Police Department asking for a $50 million increase to their 2026 budget while others city departments are facing challenges — and how at least one board member seemed aware of the conflict it would create.

(2/5) The good news is @tomdigby1.bsky.social is calling for a bike lane around prospect point and down the hill, for the safety of cyclists, active mobility and micromobility users. To help this pass, we really need people to email in support and call in to the meeting.

🚨 Important call to action! (1/5) 🚨

A vote on Stanley Park is coming to the Park Board on Sept 15. The staff report calls for working with TransLink to bring bus service around the park (great!!) but no bike lane, despite it being the favourite option among respondents. Report linked here:

No one should dispute the National Energy Program’s devastating impact on Alberta’s conventional oil and gas sector 40 years ago.

But the oilsands, not conventional oil, propelled Canada to its position as the world’s fourth-largest oil producer. @ianurquhart.bsky.social writes.

We got rid of our last gas appliance recently, & just got this letter from FortisBC urging us to ‘reconsider’ gas. Wild to see a fossil fuel company this desperate to keep people hooked on methane. Fossil gas is terrible for climate & health—especially for kids. This is straight-up propaganda.

You don’t fight a narc. You give them ideas. You agree to do things that benefit you too. Border controls is good for Canada too! You ignore their statements (ie. 51st State) - you don’t even acknowledge it. OMG so predictable.
