“This budget is basically just ’Trust me bro.’”

Vancouver city councillors got an earful Wednesday and Thursday from residents opposed to a proposed budget that would freeze property taxes and is expected to increase fees and cut services. @jenstden.bsky.social reports. #vanpoli

Over 600 people signed up to speak to Mayor Ken Sim’s tax-freeze budget. Most were opposed.

Long overdue.

Food banks do essential, often invisible work supporting our neighbours. I’m grateful that the Vancouver Liberals are pushing this forward and I fully support the efforts needed to make it happen.
City Hall should get out of the way for non-profits providing essential services!
Burnaby and Surrey don’t charge food banks property taxes. Vancouver does!
The Vancouver Liberals will immediately remove all property taxes from food banks operating in the city of Vancouver.

Ken Sim and ABC are facing huge opposition to their opaque, undemocratic, and detailless budget that will bring huge cuts to city staff, services, and programs.

Will @KenSimCity's "leanest" budget scrap the $1M #Vancouver selfie sign that the ABC majority council approved in May? Not only will that save the crazy up-front cost of making the useless sign, it will save the annual maintenance cost, estimated at $50,000-per- yr!

The Park Board fought to keep our community washrooms clean and cared for. Removing change tables is disgusting, misogynistic, and a setback for families.

Parents deserve safe, accessible spaces — this decision hurts caregivers, women, and children across Vancouver.

I'm speaker #500 against this austerity budget. I’m okay with waiting since over 600 residents are also sharing their concerns on this budget. This overwhelming number of speakers from every part of society make it clear that we don’t want services to be cut which will make our great city worse.

'Shifting burden on to families and calling it savings.'

The deadliest things said about Vancouver's Mayor tend to come from people who have worked closely with him. Funny how that is.
180: Scott Jensen, park board. In opposition. Residents don’t know the true cost of this budget. Without line by line nobody can make informed judgment. These decisions won’t come without consequences. We know this will hurt parks. Shifting burden on to families and calling it savings.

181: Tom Digby, park board commissioner. Avg 8% property tax over 3 years. This will be 6. Long term is 4.5. Zero means minus 15 million. I’m concerned about urban forestry but we are falling behind. We’ve made improvements but will lose those gains. Can’t continue to make progress.

Doing it first is wrong. My (former) ABC colleagues know this. It’s a gimmick. Hope they see past this folly

We will immediately cut property taxes in half for family doctors and walk-in medical clinics.

Vancouverites need better healthcare, and the Vancouver Liberals will do our part to enable clinicians to work in our city.

I stand with @laura-christensen.bsky.social!
