The conditions of one’s birth - country, parents’ wealth and education, language, etc. - are the biggest lottery ticket you never paid for. To be proud of any of it or look down on others’ lot is the pinnacle of delusion.

Every Democrat running for office needs to promise investigations and full prosecutions from top to bottom, remove its funding bloat then break up the agency and distribute its core remaining useful functions across other agencies.
ICE detain father shopping on Christmas Eve—then steal his family's groceries.

Then 3 agents divvy up his paid for food—taking what they want for themselves.

"Can I just get the wife's number to call and let her know?" woman asks.

"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

Attack at a mosque in Nigeria yesterday killed at least 5. Likely suicide bombing, could be Boko Haram or ISIS. But the US president said something about protecting Christians.

Nigeria is a US counterterrorism partner, so it’s not like if US bombed Venezuela. But unclear if Nigeria asked for this.

I want to *stress* that the backlash to this administration needs to be overwhelming, sustained, and come bearing legal consequences.
Joe Rogan and Shane Gillis on Nick Fuentes running for president one day.

Rogan: “He could probably win in a few years. Listen, he couldn’t have existed before, right? Ten, twenty years ago, couldn’t have existed. Now, super popular. What’s twenty years from now look like?”

Interesting article about Peter Kropotkin’s interest in Christmas.

“Unpublished archival sources reveal that Kropotkin was fascinated by this family tie [to St. Nick] and the striking physical similarity between himself and the figure of Father Christmas”

When I was on CNN's northeast desk, the first job at 6a every morning was to read the local papers. That guided some of what the massive CNN machine followed every day.

When those papers die, CNN doesn't hire new regional reporters. What you get instead is more panel shows, more punditry.
"The newspaper industry served as a feeder for our entire news media ecosystem. So when we lose those newspapers, we've lost that journalism. In the early 2000s, we had 40 journalists per 100,000 people. We're now down to 8 journalists per 100,000 people," says @victorpickard.bsky.social.

“Into this world, this demented inn, in which there is absolutely no room for him at all, Christ comes uninvited. But because he cannot be at home in it, because he is out of place in it, and yet he must be in it, his place is with those others for whom there is no room.”
The Uninvited Christ: Thomas Merton on the Shock of Christmas and the Meaning of No Room at the Inn - Biola University Center for Christian Thought / The Table
Thomas Merton offers stark and raw commentary on the meaning and importance of Christ being rejected even from "this demented inn." A beautiful expression of the glory and shock of Christmas.

As a Jew, it’s fun watching the administration post Christian nationalist messages while also saying they are doing everything they can to curb antisemitism.
Here’s the U.S. government being officially religious in a country with no official religion.

There was a 26th death in ICE custody today.

Rodney Taylor, the disabled double amputee snatched by ICE in March, is still being detained.

He’s been denied his new prosthetic legs.

Placed in solitary confinement.

Denied adequate medical care.

He needs us to make noise:

👇🎯 This works in both directions. The idea that rich financiers & CEOs understand <anything at all> about macroeconomics, sovereign debt, or monetary & fiscal policy because of their finance/corporate success is a complete category error.
One of the biggest myths in the United States which I think genuinely causes so many of our problems is the belief that executives of large companies/financial institutions need a good or accurate understanding of the macroeconomy to consistently make money. Its just not true.
