Part historical walking tour of the Town, part introduction to the field, part light theorization about the movement of the rocks we live on, the whole is an informative and pleasurable journey through the greatest city in the Bay. Like for instance: did you know Oakland is basically a giant sand dune? Alden does a good job of not just dropping that little factoid, but of contextualizing it in geologic time. Dune sand is easily shifted; winds are no tectonic plates. And then there’s the fact that Alden clearly loves the Town, and is not afraid of telling its history honest. And he loves architecture, which is just fun. — Charity

One of the most validating things that’s ever happened to me as a writer: @tractorbeamearth.bsky.social got subject matter experts to annotate my story about housing & soil remediation. I don’t know if anyone’s read them but I love that they’re there.

Nuclear power is not ok. Uranium mining is not ok, nuclear waste is not ok. The only argument in favor is that it is “more efficient” than other things that are also not ok. Hey, you know what? We actually don’t need ANY of those things, because infinite industrial growth is going to kill us all

I feel crazy at how everyone is acting like this is normal. These are concentration camps being built right before our eyes. These buildings are not meant to house human beings. People will be caged like cattle and die.

Last year I visited Austin, TX for the first time to read at Festival Beach Food Forest, a public park planted w/ edible species, & a wonderful event & education third space. Completely unique. I just found out the city plans to demolish them.
