I thought the rain was supposed to taper off for a bit, but it's a downpour out there.

I would add that every bicycle lane, every transit line, and every street we can give back to people is also a tool in our march for peace as we try to get away from fossil fuels and the violence, despoliation, and corruption they enable.

I wanna emphasize this, especially for folks who will be out on levees along SF Bay tidal marshes. In a lot of marshes, sensitive wildlife like Ridgway’s rail and salt marsh harvest mice will be concentrated along levees, where they’re trying to not get eaten by harriers. Give them some space!
Please be safe when you observe the #KingTides. The ocean is no joke, and flooded roads are no joke. Also, be aware of shore birds and other animals that may be much farther upland than usual, and may be stressed by the extreme high tides. Enjoy our coast safely. (3/?)

We are looking at some high King Tides events today and tomorrow according to the @nws.noaa.gov Bay Area office. If you are near the coast, stay safe and follow closure notices.

I love this! This made it so much easier the last time I was touristing in Portland, I didn't have to figure out a new card & then get stuck with cash on it.

But I hope it never becomes the only option: we should not have to give our travel details to a credit card company to ride public transit.
BART riders now have the option to pay for BART at the fare gates using contactless credit and debit cards, as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Tap and Ride is an immense timesaver for riders because zero registration or setup process is required.

I don't need a cargo bike.
I don't want a cargo bike.

But I love the cargo bike feed because it's all about joy: people finding something they feel makes their life so much better, so they want others to be happier too and to become part of their community.

So yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a cult. 😆
This tracks, a totally unintended consequence of getting an e-cargo bike is that family errands on weekends are way less of a hassle, and dare I say fun!

E-cargo bikes sound pretty amazing in this new UK study:

"Parents’ and children’s enjoyment, curiosity, and sense of adventure encouraged additional travel, transforming routine journeys into playful and memorable family experiences."

I've been mostly quite lucky weather-wise on recent outings. Not so much today. 😶‍🌫️

But also I'm curious if recent storms pushed the birds into other spots -- it's not just that I couldn't see them, the numbers were pretty low, and it was very quiet.

That reminds me of one of my favorite mail stories from the '80s. I was an avid letter writer & penpal 📬

We lived in a town of ~ 15k people in upstate New York. One day I received a letter addressed with only my first name, the street name, and the city name. And the mail carrier figured it out! 🤣

Way to undermine the increasingly fewer and fewer reasons to use USPS. Now it's ~useless for bill pay, taxes, or vote by mail.

I regularly still send cards & postcards, and it's been striking to me how delivery times have gotten slower and slower in the last several years.
As of 12/24/25, USPS changed policy on when they postmark mail. Mail dropped off is no longer guaranteed a same-day postmark. Tax returns & other time-sensitive items are now stamped when they reach a regional processing center, which may be days later. Plan deadlines accordingly to avoid penalties.

11,000 homes in the Richmond and Presidio lost power again Sunday night.

A little over two hours later, power has been restored to most homes.

S.F. has now had three major power outages in the last eight days.

Also a chilly visit to the Tuolumne River at Dos Rios, which I think is still the newest CA state park unit.

Important spot for river and floodplain management & restoration.

Next time I need to walk to the opposite side of the park, to the confluence of the Tuolumne & San Joaquin Rivers instead.

Chilly but calm morning along the Stanislaus River, at new-to-me Caswell Memorial State Park. could hear sandhill cranes all around, but didn't see any. It preserves a section of Central Valley mature oak riparian forest. Campground looked nice, might add it to my list of nearby options.
