this was so clarifying and maybe even slowed my heart rate
I wrote about Ta-Nehisi Coates and Ezra Klein, why swallowing live frogs is a bad idea, and how context and history can release you from bright-kid syndrome, the illusion that you yourself are going to have every answer or fix the world.
You don't have to swallow frogs
Klein and Coates show that if you don't know what your core beliefs are, you're going to get played.

1/ I worked at DoD. I literally cannot imagine lawyers coming up with a legal basis for lethal strike of suspected Venezuelan drug boat.

Hard to see how this would not be "murder" or war crime under international law that DoD considers applicable.

The duration mismatch is fascinating. On an annualized basis, tax cuts are a bottom line improvement, netted against top line payments to Medicaid. But those Medicaid assurances are used for leverage *and* debt underwriting years/decades out

Will will roil credit markets and is recessionary to boot

It’s a relatively small thing, but by not using the all-caps it fails to communicate how unhinged our president is.

Sec. Lutnick now confirms this is the case:

"The 10% baseline is for countries that have balanced budget with us, that are the best, and those who had trade deficits are going to have a higher tariff," he says on CNBC. "The best they can do is 10% -- most likely they'll be higher."
And this suggests that for nearly all other countries, most of whom the U.S. runs deficits with, the baseline tariff is not only poised to remain in place but could also be a good deal higher than 10%.
The most significant takeaway from today's UK trade announcement for me is that for a country that a) the US has a rare trade surplus with and b) had already been negotiating with the US for ~a decade, the best the UK could get was a 10% baseline tariff with very few exemptions
