I've been seeing so much Blender vs Maya fighting the last few days. Is it just me, or is all that really still relevant?

Nevertheless, laid my hands on Maya to just build myself an opinion.

As someone who used Blender since before it's 3.x-era, I really consider buying Maya though.

And of course Activision is already doing PR control.
"We us all kinds of AI tools, it just helps the talented people who work for us!!"
Aka we keep laying off people and don't wanna pay them a decent wage so we're using AI because we don't give a fuck

Why's level design so difficult in game development

I can think of a concept in a matter of hours, given a story and narration.

But so far, I've cancelled almost all of my projects because I couldn't think how the level's environment should look and what the player's supposed to do in said level.

Everything about making video games is harder than you think.

I feel like a lot of people really don't understand how hard it is even to make the smallest game. The endless flow of trailers, art, demos, retweets and reposts, etc. makes you think that anybody can make a video game. When in reality - it's easy to make a short clip for views.

If you'd see this in a game, how quick would you uninstall it? 🤔

We've got pizzaria horror games and theme park horror games. Do we have zoo horror games?

Definetely not a project I'm now working on. And definetely not to dodge writing a noise-based voxel terrain generator.

Guess I’m making animal models now :)

Current lineup:
- fox
- cat
- cougar
- penguin
- polar bear

These, I may use in a game - but I’m open to free commissions (fully rigged, textured and with fur) I’ll release publicly.

Got an animal you’d love to see?

During a talk, the speaker calculated how many games he could develop before retiring, given that each one takes three years to create.

Now I'm here, calculating how many #indiegames I'll be able to release in my lifetime.

Please make the games you like, we might not have enough time.

game development is actually:

40% im a genius
10% someone else already did this
10% I can do it better
20% oh no.
and then 30% Wait, how did this guy do it?

Which is still a burnoutable 110%

So, I wanted to get into more realistic sculpting/model creation.

This is how it turned out.

I don't know what to say, it's not what I wanted. But it's also not really bad

I struggle to understand calls to boycott Russian game devs on the principle that their nebulous "taxes" fund the horrible war. It just feels wholly more abstract than say, the targeted boycott of companies profiteering from the Palestinian Genocide. I don't want to put down anyone for it tho.

As an indie game developer, I am tired of the AI trend in the industry continuing to be pushed forward. I know the developers likely don't want to use AI and have no say in it. This is the executives.

That said, I'm proud to state that there is no AI in the making of my game and never will be!
Over half of Japanese game companies are using AI in development, states report from Tokyo Games Show organiser

It's honestly a very question to answer for anyone who's been to art school: game design is an art form, video games are a medium.
okay this seems like a good moment for this: do you guys think video games are art

There's a certain kind of person who only seems to care about the value of human life when very specific people die.

If you have not cried a river for Palestine or the victims of school shootings happening in your own fucking town, do not speak to me.

I guess it makes sense why CEOs like them. If you’re able to go to your share holders and say you have an infinite gain in efficiency to a bunch of people with more money than brains it doesn’t matter if it’s true

I was finally convinced by a dev friend to try some AI code tool, despite me being generally skeptical to them. I asked it to optimize some code and explain the performance gains. It did seem to make some useful edits, but then fixed a non-existant bug (afaik) and said the performance gain was "∞%".

That is often the CORE issue of obsessive/addictive gameplay design.
What is best for the game studio is often NOT what is best for the game player.
And a game designer wishing to act ethically needs to think about that hard.
Long ago, at a company that no longer exists, I heard someone say our games needed to get better at "driving the compulsion loop."

And, I mean, no disrespect toward that person - our studio was struggling to survive at that point.

But I did think to myself: "Wow. Is that what we want?" 😐
