Hard no to this: French publisher Harlequin has told translators that their work will now be done by AI. They can ‘revise’ AI translations at much lower rate. It’s a subsidiary of Harper Collins so treat this as a test for rollout elsewhere

Depuis quelques semaines, plusieurs dizaines de traducteurs et traductrices travaillant régulièrement avec les éditions Harlequin reçoivent les unes après les autres un appel téléphonique leur annonçant la fin de leur collaboration avec la maison d’édition. Leurs contrats en cours seront les derniers. Collection par collection, Harlequin abandonne la traduction : un prestataire externe, l’agence de communication Fluent Planet, se chargera de passer les textes dans un logiciel de « traduction automatique » et de recruter directement en freelance des relecteurs et relectrices chargées de post-éditer la sortie machine en français. L’objectif affiché est de gagner en rentabilité en rognant sur le temps de travail. C’est, à notre connaissance, la première fois en France qu’une maison d’édition passe à grande échelle à la « traduction automatique » et à la post-édition, de surcroît en externalisant cette activité. Dès lors, mérite-t-elle encore le nom de « maison d’édition » ? De telles pratiques sont inacceptables. Des personnes, parfois collaboratrices de longue date de la maison, perdent brutalement une source de revenus régulière, ne se voyant offrir comme compensation que la possibilité (sans aucune garantie, d’ailleurs) de travailler au rabais pour un prestataire externe, Fluent Planet, au lieu de traduire pour une maison d’édition. Une perspective que beaucoup des traducteurs et traductrices concernées refusent. Pour cesser de travailler avec nous, artistes-auteurs et autrices, pas besoin de licenciement ni de préavis, même si la collaboration a été régulière pendant cinq, dix, voire vingt ans. La réalité de la perte brutale d’activité et de revenus n’en est pas moins là. Nous subissons de plein fouet la précarité extrême de notre condition d’artistes-autrices et auteurs : nous n’avons aucun droit au chômage, et certaines personnes concernées proches de l’âge de la retraite ne pourront même pas compter sur une pension décente du fait du non-appel des cotisations de la part de l’AGESSA. Dans ces circonstances, nous devons en tant que profession nous élever collectivement face à ce qui s’apparente à un plan social invisible. Ces pratiques sont une trahison des travailleurs et travailleuses du livre, mais aussi une trahison du lectorat. C’est brader totalement l’activité de traduction, au mépris des personnes qui traduisent et de celles qui lisent. C’est mettre le doigt dans l’engrenage de la dégradation des productions éditoriales, dans une logique délétère du « good enough » (qualité passable) qui dépossède les travailleurs et travailleuses du livre de leur savoir-faire et de leur créativité, et le lectorat d’un accès à une littérature humaine et vivante. Travailleurs, travailleuses du livre, directions de maisons d’édition, lecteurs, lectrices : refusons que la « traduction automatique » mette le pied dans la porte des maisons d’édition et réaffirmons notre attachement inconditionnel à des textes humains, créés par des humaines et des humains, dans des conditions de travail dignes. "I, a trans woman, believed I had to follow the EHRC interim update and was followed into the men's room by a male security officer and told to get out. It is worth noting that before this I was already shaking with fear about the possible confrontation that could ensue. The security man and the two other men in the room circled me. I said I believed, according to what the EHRC and our political leaders have said, that I have to be in there now. Now that he infers I am trans, he starts sniggering at me. The other men in the room join him in laughing at me. I tell him that it isn't funny and please stop laughing at me. He doesn't stop and I say "it might be funny to you but to me this is my life and I am scared, scared about being attacked, please stop laughing, it's not funny'. He tells me he doesn't care what I have to say, that I need to get out. So I do. I leave and talk to the store manager, where again, I have to relay all sorts of intimate and private details, of my background, my trans and intersex statuses, history of being assaulted, my genital configuration. This is humiliating. I felt deeply unsafe, humiliated, hopeless like nobody cares, violated. I don't think the EHRC lets me use the [service of my gender] so I was just denied service." Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.
This is the saddest day of my professional life. Today is not only the final recording of the latest series of The Infinite Monkey Cage, it is my last ever Monkey Cage. I never thought that I would have to leave the show. I always imagined going on until | dropped dead under the studio lights due to a brain aneurysm caused by my final attempt to understand notions of quantum gravity or the shock of being told about fly maggot infestations in the sacks of macaque monkeys. I resigned in September, after sixteen years of dedication to the show, A show that I named and helped develop over all those years. Unfortunately, my opinions outside the BBC have been considered problematic for sometime, whether it has been voicing support for the trans community, criticism of Donald Trump, numerous other outlandish opinions, including once gently criticising Stephen Fry. These things were considered to conflict with being a freelance BBC science presenter In a recent meeting where BBC Studio executives again voiced problems with me, I realised my choices. Obedience and being quieter to remain making Monkey Cage, or 'Resign and have the freedom to speak out against what I believe are injustices'. • I chose the latter. It broke my heart. I love this show and I love the audience, and it is because of the audience in particular, that this decision was so difficult to make. I kept thinking about all the extremist voices promoting hate and division. They are being given so many platforms, while voices that represent kindness, open mindedness, empathy seem to be scarcer and scarcer. I felt I couldn't pamper myself with the luxury of silence. One of my many privileges is that I am able to resign and I can speak out even if it is to the detriment of my career. I have thought a lot about my heroes, Sinead O Connor, James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, and so many more. I think of Sinead's words, "the job of an artist is to be themselves at any cost". James Baldwin said prejudice was really just a word for cowardice. Audre Lorde, viewing her life, wrote that her only regrets were her silences. I think of my father as I resign, he brought me up to believe in fairness , justice and kindness. Though my heart is broken, it is also full of fire. I apologise to our incredible listeners for my departure, your love of the show means a great deal. I am so sorry to let you down. I hope that you can understand my reasoning. I have to accept that I am not what the current BBC expects of their freelance presenters. Despite this I should add that I have always worked far more than my contracted hours to try and ensure the show was always the best it could be, as well as making myself accessible and responsive to the audience wherever and whenever I met them. Every night, we have recorded, I have been filled with determination to make the best show possible. This was not "just a job" I hope that with my departure I can be a better ally to the LGBTQ community, to the neurodivergent community, to activists fighting against those who aim to brutalise society, to those currently in prison on hunger strike, and to all those who fight for a more inclusive world. From many conversations, I know there are many Monkey Cage listeners who support these communities and activists too. The strawberry is dead. Long live the strawberry. B
