And a tiny piece of good news, my friend, the writer Boualem Sansal, whose novels, essays and speeches I have had the privilege to translate, has been pardoned by the Algerian government. He is now in Germany being treated for cancer.

worth applying to politics as well. when you're criticizing an action people take "taking the better action next time" is only one of the alternatives people will consider, and worth remembering that "not bothering at all" is another.

We are so sad to hear that Dave Ball, the keyboard genius of Soft Cell, has died. He was an electronic pop pioneer and with Marc Almond made a unique catalogue of songs, completely original in sound and content. Our love and condolences go to Marc and all those close to Dave. Neil and Chris xx
