Elderly trans novelist and poet living in London.
Seriously...I was an early member of GLF, a former Deputy Chair of Liberty, involved in consultations on both the GRA and the EA and various trans health initiatives. I have had a distinguished career in publishing and writing. Of course they'd never appoint me but turning me down would look bad.
The job adverts for EHRC Commissioners (4 posts) are finally out.
Deadline: 1st December.
If you, or anyone you know, feels brave enough to apply, please do consider putting in an application!

Did we all know that Lee Harvey Oswald was an SF reader?

These are the words I try to live by in my politics.
I had just started reading this over the weekend...

“…you can't throw anybody under the bus. You can't leave anybody behind. And that's become my favorite thing to say to people: I won't throw anybody under the bus, and I'm not leaving anybody. It has to include us all, or it's not going to work.”
Reading Miss Majors Speaks was an incredibly moving experience last year. I can't recommend this book enough for those unfamiliar with her work.

Rest in peace 🖤

Miss Major has passed. One of the best of that generation of trans women of colour who started our fight.
"You make the best of it all and hope you can help make it a little better for the gurl after you."

I’ve been appointed to be the local government correspondent of @thenerve_news covering the Russian Spy Party - Нет-нет-нет. Это не «Русская шпионская партия». Это «Реформа Великобритании». Извините за путаницу .

An excellent LRB piece by the late Connor Gearty which sets the For Women Scotland judgement in a broader context of the current UK Supreme Court walking back all uses of the HRA to limit regressive state power and promote extension of human rights.

He will be missed

Demo against Digital ID and surveillance state at Angel. A lot of honking in support.

The first of many to get caught, I hope. Too many people in public life have taken money from foreign powers to act in ways that harm us all.

Ironic that so many of them tout conspiracy theories while being part of actual conspiracies.
Nathan Gill is no fringe politician.

He was the leader of the Reform Party and before that UKIP in Wales.

A Brexit Party MEP.

A friend and ally of Nigel Farage, who in 2016 called him:

"terrific," and "as honest as the day is long."

This is a MASSIVE story

This is an excellent thread on how the brilliance of Vergil is closely tied to his ambivalence about power and success. It can be argued that the effectiveness of Octavian/Augustus was that he tolerated that level of ambivalence towards his autocratic rule from great artists.
If you view the Aeneid simply as Vergil writing self-insert fan-fic, you are missing the complexity of the poem.

Vergil tasked with writing *the* definitive version of Rome's founding myths at the dawn of a new autocracy whose autocrat claims direct descent from Aeneas and this is what he writes!

Ian Dunt being excellent - if on Substack - about Starmer's version of ID cards as an example of the folly of making concessions to racist populism.

ID cards are a terrible, terrible idea
Many people I admire believe firmly in ID cards, or have grown to accept them. This is why they're wrong.

One of the reasons why the Right oppress trans people while also consuming vast amounts of porn about us is that they want to keep us poor, marginalised and available for low paid sex work. They hate the idea of our having other options.

Even back in the 70s and 80s when I could be hassled by the police for walking while trans, no one ever tried to stop me pissing in the Ladies or tried to make me change into my swimsuit among men.

There is no dignity or respect involved in taking away rights I have exercised freely for forty years

Russia is facing a cold cold winter with the logistics of keeping warm seriously fucked and a million war dead. Constant provocations are intended to make NATO do something that will enable Putin to unify Russians in patriotism.

Which makes Trump's suddenly turn to hawkishness a bit interesting.

He's definitely plotting to get rid of Starmer and become PM, and has realised transphobia might get in his way. I mean, his other major areas of liability are his relationship with private health care and his personality and he clearly can't change either of those....
"Health Secretary Wes Streeting has vowed to ensure the safety of LGBTQ+ patients in the NHS after hearing “firsthand” trans harassment accounts"

Yeah Wes, the trans harassment is actually coming from you

(Oh look, bonus points for him squeezing in a "Dignity and Respect" there as well)

Farage wants the UK to quit the ECHR. It is exactly what Putin wants, for the UK to join Russia and Belarus as the only European countries outside the ECHR. It would be a huge victory for Putin in his war against human rights and the international rule of law.

Farage is a traitor.

I'm not sure all of them are yet committed to our physical eradication or incarceration but that's their direction of travel. They are getting annoyed that most people don't comply with their desire that we just shut up,go away and stop being difficult.
If you think there's a giant conspiracy amongst the UK government, the media, and a small group of extremely well-funded genitally-obsessed bigots to harass and dehumanize trans people, that's because there is.
