Great story about some amazing young scientists and an important message on failing leadership in America
“They are so smart I can’t keep up,” says Kate Sharer, biotechnology teacher at Lambert High School in Suwanee, Georgia. “Because they are still teenagers, so they're thinking so far out of the box.” cbsn.ws/48mMTRB

This is so true. Academics are totally committed to creating meaningless work for ourselves.
Begging PhD programs to agree on a common app with only letters of rec that writers upload once. These inane likert scales when students are applying to 15-20 programs is destroying my soul

You are correct. In the past, it was okay to say that the application was funded because it received a 4th percentile and the payline was the 10th percentile.

Now additional justification must be provided.

But, in the past, if a 4th %ile app was not funded, documentation was required. Now, nothing

I agree that this is a tragedy. The pessimistic part of me thinks this is intentional because they want all biotech scientific founders to be beholden to rich investors at lower valuations.
Such a tragedy for the tech world—Congress hasn’t reauthorized the SBIR program and all solicitations have been expired.

All biotech is being hit!

Big new paper from us published yesterday: The synaptic ectokinase VLK triggers the EphB2–NMDAR interaction to drive injury-induced pain

The synaptic ectokinase VLK triggers the EphB2–NMDAR interaction to drive injury-induced pain
Phosphorylation of hundreds of protein extracellular domains is mediated by two kinase families but the functional role of these kinases is underexplored. We find that the presynaptic release of the t...

This is totally nuts. Also, not a good idea to piss off every nurse in the nation.
🧵 Let’s be so effing for real right now. The Department of Education saying these jobs are no longer PROFESSIONAL is dumb as hell and insulting as fuck. It takes YEARS of post-graduate training, including passing certifying exams, to earn degrees in these fields. #fdt #momsky
