Over the course of my life I see a lot of people talking about "the liberal agenda" or "the conservative agenda," and I just wanted to talk about my agenda.

At this point in my life, I would consider myself a left-of-center Democrat who is find with well-regulated capitalism.

This may be a dumb question.

Why do we talk about "girl dads" and "boy moms" but never "girl moms" or "boy dads."

Like, I'm not sure what the first two illustrate that the second two don't tbh. Is the assumption that the opposite-gender-ness makes for special social commentary?

One of my daughters was frustrated with the site crash and mentioned the church should not have been so unprepared for the demand. The leaders like to say they are in touch with member concerns. They are clearly not.

We are so screwed if people keep relying on mainstream outlets to protect democracy. @davidchasecohen.bsky.social and I make a case here for why we need independent media and people with resources need to step up and fund it thebarbedwire.com/2025/10/03/b...

So much Democrat and pundit handwringing about the shutdown as if they're in charge of the government.

They're not. The only possibilities are Trump makes things worse with Democratic approval or Trump makes things worse despite Democratic resistance. Don't bail him out.

My latest (on @msnbc.com):
Opinion | Democrats shouldn’t bail out Trump as the shutdown drags on
The best time for the opposition to take a stand, rather than settle for untrustworthy promises, is right now.

"I'd like tto see people do what Charlie Kirk did. But not what Charlie Kirk *actually* did, rather what I choose to believe he did"
This was the most fascinating exchange to me. Coates asks whether a liberal going to Evangelical churches and selectively editing exchanges to mock Christians would be "doing politics the right way."

Klein says it would if it were done completely differently.

Of note: Gov. Whitmer noticeably handled the shooting differently than elected officials after UT, TX shootings.

Cox urged calm, but shared alleged Kirk shooter details. Sen. Cruz linked ICE shooting to political rhetoric.

Whitmer, today: "Speculation is unhelpful and can be downright dangerous."
not surprising, but positively maddening (to the point of making me feel insane) that the response to this particular act of violence has been so subdued
From an editorial standpoint I get *why* they caveat stuff like this in this sort of breaking situation, but this is still a funny set of sentences.

One path forward I could envision Democrats message on isn’t any of the (obvi. important) policy stuff - it’s that a spouse is whoever you love, a family is the kids or pets you cherish, we’re all just out here trying our best — so let’s make it a little bit easier and a little bit cheaper for all

I think this is what made Walz a pretty singular figure for Democrats — he engaged on cultural issues in a way with broad appeal.

He wasn’t talking about democratic norms — he was a school teacher saying he’d provide free meals to kids and keep the government from asking about their privates
I think today convinced me inheritors of the Trump movement won’t be the firebrands in the mold of Trump himself, they’ll instead be the conservative Christians like JD Vance or Mike Johnson — equally willing to ignore norms, more faith fluent, less noise.

TRUMP: I think very good. And by the way, right there you see all the trucks. They just started construction of the new ballroom for the White House, which is something they've been trying to get for about 150 years.
