Greatly looking forward to #SfN2025 to ✨debut✨ the new rat task I've been developing this past year since starting my postdoc. Also, check out my trainees' posters: lab tech Anthony (who's applying to grad school this cycle!) and stellar undergrad Ben. It's their first SfN so please say hi!

Transportation costs are the second largest burden on American family budgets (17%), after housing (33%)!
To address the affordability crisis, we must create cities with abundant housing of all types (subsidized, social, coop, market rate) and make walking, biking, and taking transit convenient.

Big big thanks

to all the program officers and scientific review officers coming back online and managing to instill positivity and we-can-do-this attitudes in emails out to applicants & reviewers who might have wondered: What will happen to all of this good work?

Answer: let's do this.

Obviously not the worst thing going on right now, but I am feeling sad about my F32 that was supposed to go to study section today. On the other hand, I got the mythical bike car this morning, for the first time in my >year of daily train commuting. Lifted my spirits a bit. It's really nice.

You probably already know this, but today was the first full missed pay check for most of your friends, colleagues, POs and SROs at the NIH.

Stay strong out there folks. If you need help, ask for it. As always, try to be kind.

Something like 80-90% of money spent on cars leaves the local economy and maybe even the country.

We need to talk more
about how transit by contrast provides good Union jobs in your community!!!
The good news is that investing our transportation funding better can also deliver high-quality union jobs. bsky.app/profile/nrdc...
Across the country, governors and mayors are working to get people out of traffic and into affordable housing and good-paying jobs. A new study shows that, with the right investments, we can do all three at once.

Inadequate bike infrastructure is a major contributor to cyclist casualties in the US, but the attitudes of US drivers are also a huge factor. They view cyclists not as fellow commuters but as obstacles that don’t belong there, and they assume anyone biking instead of driving is being a contrarian.
