So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!

Sarah Schulman on “feeling safe,” from Conflict Is Not Abuse:

“It is used by the dominant to defend against the discomfort of hearing other people’s realities, to repress nuance, ignore multiple experiences, and reject the inherent human right to be heard.”
One thing the NYC mayoral race underscored for me is how easily the phrase "I don't feel safe" can be weaponized. It's an argument I would hesitate ever to use again, even for a good cause. I hope we can all agree that we have the right to BE safe. Maybe we should leave it at that.

You don’t raze entire towns and cities street by street with controlled demolitions and bulldozers for any military objective. You do it because the aim is to wipe those places out of existence forever, and it’s not like they’ve been hiding this.

With endless rubble and destroyed streets as far as the eye can see, any plans for Gaza's future are a far cry from where it is today, writes Lucy Williamson.

Democratic party leadership has been on autopilot for ten years, they weren't losing to fascism, fascism isn't popular enough for them to lose to fascism, they were allowing it to fill the void where their leadership should have been. Tonight we're seeing that we have other options. They should too.

What happens now is that every dropped piece of trash, every inch of graffiti, every broken down subway train, every disappointing sandwich, every rat in Central Park, and every single crime gets blamed on Zohran Mamdani... by racists who never go near NYC.

My tip as a Londoner. Shrug and carry on.

It's in the interests of the far right to terrify the population.

They think panic will breed hatred, and that will allow them to ethnically cleanse the country - and build an authoritarian state.

But it's based on lies.

Lies and hatred - the eternal basis of the far right.

1. You were in command of forces that tortured, raped, and murdered thousands of innocent people.
or,
2. You are a socialist.
When the news calls you a “divisive figure” in 2025 that means you did some atrocities

Again, this precise use case is why these systems exist-to proliferate people’s racist (transphobic, misogynistic…) imaginary at scale. This should not be seen as a “misuse” but rather the product being used exactly as intended.

We don't cast off one segment of society to save ourselves. It's a betrayal of everything we're trying to defend. It's a cowardly kind of self-preservation.

If your plan for escaping this bank robbery involves deliberately killing a few of our fellow hostages, maybe sit this chat out for a while?
This is why Gavin Newsom is a non-starter for me.

Sure, he's "a fighter" who's landed a few good punches on Trump, but that's not the same thing as a leader.

A real leader doesn't fight back against an authoritarian takeover by using the most vulnerable as his shield.
I keep seeing people say, oh, trans people must take a hit for the greater good and, first of all, no, you don't get to discard someone else's rights and second, we know from past experience that marginalized communities like theirs are merely the first to be targeted. They'll come for you next.

Experiencing a lot of this even in online private tutoring. So frustrating and dispiriting.
Cheating with an LLM is the easiest thing in the world for a student to do, but it creates a massive, laborious headache for a prof, if you intend to take it seriously. There’s meetings, emails, discussions, moral dilemmas. It’s just incredibly burdensome, on top of everything else right now.
I had 9 meetings about students using Chat GPT/LLMs on their papers today.
