An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.

Becoming skilled in anything, is the ability to see a new problem and go "this reminds me of this previous problem, which I solved this way"

Even with a calculator, the person using the calculator benefits from experience in solving problems.

They have not outsourced problem-solving itself.

"Africa Rise, China Roar" by Prof. Yunxiang Gao looks at the connected lives of African American and Chinese leftist activists, artists and intellectuals after WWII.

Video shows Dr. DuBois' visit to China where he was warmly welcomed. His wife, Shirley Graham DuBois, lived & later died in Beijing.
In 1952 the State Department illegally revoked W.E.B.Du Bois’s passport to stop him from traveling. SCOTUS restored passport rights for suspected communists in 1958, and three years later Du Bois become an expat in postcolonial Ghana. 1/2

Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action

Archaeologist here. For 99.5% of human history (ca 300-400,000 years), we were peaceful (no war). There was conflict and smaller scale violence, but countless studies on the 119 known modern hunter gatherer groups show cooperation, negotiation, and peace instead of conflict. Please read books.
Revenge/physical combat was how people settled things for literally millions of years, it's normal human behavior, we're wolves not sheep, the government project trying to social engineer us and domesticate us into sheep has been unsuccessful

THIS IS BIG

For non-academics who might not understand why:
1. Sen. Warren is still a Harvard professor so this is a call coming from inside the house
2. As a tenured law prof, Warren knows it is a VERY big deal from a labor standpoint to call on Harvard to ignore tenure. The bar for this is HIGH.
Per CNN, Elizabeth Warren is calling on Harvard to cut ties with Larry Summers after Jeffrey Epstein's emails released last week by House Dems featured Summers making sexist comments + asking for Epstein’s romantic advice.

Very persuasive. Worth underlining that there are trade-offs. If your goal is to "improve the writing," but also "keep this accessible to the widest possible audience, and don't advocate any specific perspective," you are pulling and pushing on the same lever. Humans can't both pull & push either.

Summers called this female Chinese economist “peril.”

“Yellow peril” was partially built on the claim that Chinese women were sexually immoral threats.

That logic fueled the Page Act of 1875, which barred Chinese women by presuming they were prostitutes, even before the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act.
Summers conferred with Epstein frequently about how to extract sexual favors from a Harvard econ grad (AB '04, PhD '09)

The grad is from China

Epstein and Summers referred to her by the codename "Peril"
