Ask the school and council to work together to make it safe for travel to and from actively.

Important stuff from @katjadiehl.bsky.social, linking children’s exclusion from their streets to both car-centrism and adultism (which are of course connected):

“how deeply adultism is ingrained in our cities — and how it robs children of what they need most: freedom, movement and self-efficacy”

We underestimate children’s abilities to bike their own bike for transportation because our infrastructure doesn’t work for children. My daughter can easily bike over 5 miles, which is around the distance of many errands, but my fear of her safety holds us back from taking those trips.

✔️ When you have kids, you need comfortable, convenient, safe bicycle infrastructure.*

Very good, evidence-based comment piece about low-traffic neighbourhoods - and how opponents often use them as a proxy for problems which are caused instead by too many cars.

Just ignore all the myths about low traffic neighbourhoods: they’re popular, effective and here to stay | Izzy Romilly
After the high court ruled one high-profile scheme unlawful, it is important to make the case for LTNs. Luckily, there is a strong one to make, says Izzy Romilly of climate charity Possible

The article is behind a paywall but you’ll get the gist from👇.

As the article says: “Poll after poll has shown it is not the weather that puts people in Scotland off cycling, it is the fear of being hit by cars.”

Where safe cycling networks have been built people are using them.
Increases in people travelling by bike recorded across Scotland
Recent analysis of national cycle counter data shows 24 locations across Scotland recording increases of above 30% in cycle journeys in June 2024, compared with 2023.

Can we please stop normalizing #Motonormativity with our children?

By not introducing them to transportation alternatives, we limit their growth and the future health of our communities

Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream, 1000 acre park and improved public transit, not only did it TRANSFORM the city’s public life and economic success, but the car traffic got better.

The car traffic got BETTER.

People often cite hair as a reason to not like wearing helmets.

As it’s not really a choice for my children, and one of them likes to have beautiful smooth hair, we needed a solution for helmets.

We found that using a silk scarf under the helmet really makes a big difference!
