"The world remembers the leaders of thought, the creators of beauty and the things of the spirit.”
Topic sentence of the year.
Bari Weiss is the logical endpoint of corporate media. This is what happens when people who hate journalism are in charge of it. The only way journalism works is when it’s independent from the power it’s supposed to hold to account, which means ownership can’t have anything to do with those in power

Now seems like a swell time to point out that Frontline just released this excellent 11-minute mini-documentary about what happened inside CECOT.

I am furious that DOJ ignored the new federal law requiring release of the Epstein Files. I am equally angry that so many in legacy media seem not to care.

Brilliant from @adamserwer.bsky.social: the Roberts Court's attack on the Reconstruction Amendments are "consistent with the Antebellum Constitution’s narrow definition of who “We the People” are."

Consumers don’t know if their medications came from factories that used dirty water, were infested by insects or birds, or were outright banned from shipping drugs to the U.S.

Our new app provides answers that the FDA won’t.

If Donald Trump channeled Huey Long in his rise to the nomination, we have here Vance's inspiration.
In the summer of 1950 most US newspapers ran an AP story about how race had become the main issue in the upcoming Georgia governor's race. Segregationist Herman Tallmadge, governor from '47 to '55 and then a Senator until 1981 made a name for himself by refusing to "apologize for being a white man."

More from the NYT: The childhood vaccination schedule in the US had been tailored for the country’s large and diverse population and patchy system of medical care. Denmark and Germany have comprehensive free prenatal care and an infant mortality rate that is about half of the U.S. rate.

Realizing the Democrats aren't releasing this postmortem shows they're still focused on short term election gains rather than long term consensus building, still mired in the past, too cautious, and missing the opportunity to strengthen.
It's SO infuriating.

fucking NO.
Hard no to this: French publisher Harlequin has told translators that their work will now be done by AI. They can ‘revise’ AI translations at much lower rate. It’s a subsidiary of Harper Collins so treat this as a test for rollout elsewhere

New leadership desperately needed.
ICYMI, this is still bad:
BREAKING: The Democratic National Committee will NOT release its long-awaited autopsy on Trump's 2024 win. The report is completed but Dem leaders decided it could distract from their winning streak, so it will remain secret. Not good.

I could not care less where Trump ends up, but the corruption he's enabled has got to end. Do Democrats have leadership strong enough and incorruptible enough to end it? To rebuild well? We voters need to do better. It's going to take a village.
The Trump family has amassed a $4 billion fortune since his re-election.

During my time as Ambassador, I was accused of "focusing too intensely on the issue of corruption." There's no such thing.

We need leaders who serve the people — not themselves.
