Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered, yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict the more glorious the triumph.

Such a true statement. Going to QT this just to help promote David McRaney’s book “You’re Not So Smart”. That book changed my life enormously for the better.
No bigger mark than a guy who thinks he’s smart.

It really gives credence to the argument that staying on Twitter too long will fry your brain and that audience capture is real, especially amongst those who get validation from social media, but are too ashamed to admit it openly.
Not tagging or QT to avoid looking like a pile-on, but there's a Big Journo convo going on, and it's really clarifying how the bad replies on here affect them so much more because they're directly targeted at them, vs the absolutely mad environment over there, which is just ambient noise. Not great!

no reforming this.
“His life is in danger,” Rep. Joaquin Castro said Tuesday about Juan Nicolás, the 2-month-old baby who was hospitalized with bronchitis overnight — and is being held at Dilley Family Detention Center, which reported a measles outbreak earlier this month.

At this point, the wealthy class funneling money into Musk's ventures only makes sense when it's understood as an expression of class solidarity. There is no defensible argument, rooted in reality, other than something akin to "i'm betting on musk because that's what rich people are doing."
super hard core

The idea that modern conservatism is based on the idea of in groups in which the law protects but does not bind, and outgroups in which the law binds but does not protect l, is exemplified almost daily in the deluge of Fox News clips I’m subjected to against my will on this site.

In the US civil war, disease killed twice as many soldiers as combat.
before antibiotics did people just die all the time from everything?

The 2nd hand embarrassment I got from reading Timiraos‘ post was bad. Unforced cringe error on his part.
Lot of mad people around these parts, sure, but blue tick media accounts coming on here to whine about how they’re not praised enough to make it worth cross-posting on BSky is not exactly a great look. You have to make at least a modicum of effort on a social platform to build the audience you want.

After having to deal with taking annexation of Canada and Greenland as serious propositions, I fully expect Puerto Rico and DC to be states by 2030.

It’s understated how much the obsession with wealth comes from a realization of how much it sucks working relentlessly for just a modest living.
need to make everyone in San Francisco watch this video every morning and every night

Flying the flag upside down makes it look like you’re indulging in the distress of America and not just signifying it. It’s why the image of that never goes well for people who insist upon doing it.

Even prior to the revolution, the extent to which the planter class speculated in illegal western lands was a huge source of wealth. Imagine making a polymarket bet that Canada gets annexed and writing up a bullshit land title claiming all the land in Ontario, then selling that to tenant farmers.
"the elite of the antebellum South were degenerate gamblers who financed their lifestyles with industrialized rape and would kill you for pointing this out" is a straightforwardly accurate statement

Twitter is a pox on political ideology. It accelerates self-destruction. Kind of a blessing that the right has insisted on possessing the monkey paw.
One reason I keep saying that Trump's departure won't end our fascism problem is that every Republican presidential aspirant (even those who 10 years ago were "normal") are talking like twitter nazis now
The Rubio speech really is appalling, and if you haven’t read it yet, you should.

In 1854, after watching the federal government deploy 2000 federal troops and spend $40,000 sending Anthony Burns back into slavery, Boston's Amos Adams Lawrence said “we went to bed one night old-fashioned, conservative, Compromise Union Whigs and waked up stark mad Abolitionists.”

One of the more powerful things about this image is how the flag is right side up.

I agree with this, good luck getting rural America to mass mobilize to get / renew their passports.
The funny thing about the MAGA voter ID crusade is...are they SURE they want to do that? Increase the hurdles to advantage the most motivated? Because I assure you, Democratic voters will jump through any hoop you put in front of them to get a ballot cast. Can MAGA say the same of its voters?

evidently, the pdf links that the DOJ put up can be used to identify corresponding video. Most of the stuff being uncovered is pretty random, but some of the stuff is gross. Reddit has been dissecting this stuff for the last couple days.

BTC and #$TSLA are just two turds in a bowl. Just flush them both down already. It’s embarassing to financial markets to have both of these be anything other than zero. The thesis for both requires either clinical delusion or complicity in fraud.

Invoking wealthy class solidarity to excuse sex crimes against children is sorta the Epstein Class in a nutshell
Bondi crashes out over Epstein: "The Dow is over 50,000 dollars! I don't know why you're laughing. You're a great stock trader as I hear, Raskin. The Dow is over 50,000 right now. The S&P at almost 7,000, and the Nasdaq smashing records. That's what we should be talking about."
