Staph infections were fatal so often that we distinguished them by what part of the body they attacked first. "Childbed fever" is a term for a variety of post-birth complications that killed a lot of women. There are reasons wet nurses used to be so common. (And they're not all class-based.)

i think lots of people underestimate how badly these “AI” companies want people to be unable to afford computers. they view personal computing as a roadblock to their desire for complete end-to-end centralization. the fact that their tech is putting hardware out of reach is not just a happy accident

Genuinely I have warned SO many friends about how untenable being on Disability is in the US even beyond taking an obscene amount of work and time to even get listened to.
I finally managed to get off disability 8 years ago and I am STILL paying off some of the ramifications of how broken it was.

Imagine this — you finally get approved for disability by in 2020 (after years of trying) but the moment you get a job that is no longer contract (2022) they say you owe them 45,000 in back pay (2023) because you can’t be disabled and work.
