MN State Fair crop art 2025 thread:

1. This year, the Minneapolis Institute of Art sponsored two prizes, so there were lots of entries inspired by fine art. These are the two winners:

I'm pretty proud of this poem I made out of the euphemisms that companies used to describe the ICE occupation in corporate communications. Also read the whole story: racketmn.com/corporate-co...

I asked someone to take our group pic after Jessie Diggins won bronze in the 10k and it turned out it was Jessie’s awesome mom 😄

This is the scene I was at this morning. I know Minnesotans filming ICE in their bathrobes is becoming a bit of a thing, but after you laugh, let it dawn on you that people here hate ICE so much that we rush out half-dressed to film even when there are already dozens of others doing the same thing.
A high-speed car chase involving a federal agent in St. Paul ended with a multi-vehicle crash and injuries to the fleeing driver, who was taken away in an ambulance. bit.ly/4kvJo0M

easy slogan for the next democratic presidential candidate is “i will reform the corrupt supreme court and repeal citizens united”
“When Citizens United was decided in 2010, billionaires had spent $18 million on the 2000 election, $13M 2004 and $16M in 2008. Then came the deluge. In 2012 it was $231M, and nearly doubled again in next three election cycles —to $682M in 2016, $1.2 billion in 2020 and $2.6 billion in 2024.” Gift:

Today was an off day for curling while we skied the Dolomites so we’re getting our curling fix now. My new favorite drink is a bombardino

Olympics side note: We are lucky enough to be in Cortina for the Olympics, and everyone we have met (from many countries!) who learns we are from Minnesota has supported us with some version of “we know the American people are not the US government and we are sorry this is happening to you”.
Like 75% of the US Olympic curlers are from Minnesota. A lot of them curl out of two clubs in Saint Paul, one club is in Frogtown, a neighborhood that has been very heavily targeted by ICE. These curlers are good neighbors.
US Olympic Curling Team member speaks out against ICE:

"I'm proud to represent Team USA. But we'd be remiss if we didn't mention what's going on in Minnesota and what a tough time it's been. What's happening is wrong. There's no shades of gray."

This is still going on in Minnesota. For all of you seeing my curling posts, this is a couple blocks from the Saint Paul Curling club, home club for Tara and Tabitha Peterson and Rich Ruohonen.
This is the aftermath of an ICE kidnapping a few blocks from my home in St. Paul—an hour ago. A quiet street full of broken glass and at least three wrecked cars. The target of the kidnapping was taken away by ambulance. He was on a stretcher and covered by a sheet, though a cop said he was alive.

The comments! 🤣 I really wish I could say I was dancing like this after hanging out with Snoop Dogg but this was just me dancing lol. In my defense, they cut out the music I was dancing to, which would make this make sense haha

No slight to the excellent curlers of Team USA, but this is the power of @stpauligrrrl.bsky.social particular brand of magic, I'm sure.
Team USA had never reached the semifinals in mixed doubles curling, but the duo from Duluth is going for gold after today's stunning upset. https://bringmethenews.com/minnesota-sports/duluth-curlers-shock-defending-olympic-champs-advance-to-gold-medal-round

Me: I’m 25% Swedish
Swede (joking): are you from Minnesota?
Me: yes!
Swede: (laughs)

Turns out they are family and friends of Wrana, the Swedish curler in the gold medal match with USA

The curling community is great everywhere

What’s it like to have a mayor like this guy
Mamdani: "I speak of Renee Good, whose final words to the man who murdered her were, 'I'm not mad at you.' I speak of Alex Pretti who died as he lived, caring for the stranger. ICE shot him bc he did something they could never fathom ... let us offer a new path: one of defiance through compassion."

Excellent idea.

Non-locals can also buy gift cards from local businesses that offer them to spend when you visit. (Or just buy them to show support or give to others who are here on the ground now.) Buy merch if offered too.

And of course throw money around here: www.standwithminnesota.com
Axios had a story today about how hard Minnesota’s economy is being hit and how slow the recovery could be. So, I’m going to take this opportunity to say that if you want to support the Twin Cities, you should plan a visit for this summer, spend some money here, & see how amazing it is for yourself.
