I live in (what I think I'm correct in saying is) the most diverse constituency in the whole country - Dublin Central, D1 - *and* I'm old enough to remember what this place was like before significant immigration, and the idea that immigration hasn't been good for this country is fucking laughable

Last night, in Hamburg, we had another disarmament.
Never forget the unbelievable long-term consequences of war.

Love not such nights as these. The wrathful skies
Gallow the very wanderers of the dark
And make them keep their caves.

I don't think that includes your thesis, mine kept me up all night.

Approaching perfect reflection of reality:
The Republican president is a pedophile who has doubled my healthcare costs and let scores of violent criminals out of jail. But a Democratic mayor-elect wants to make busses free in a city I don't live in. I have never felt more politically homeless.

I also wish people would spell out the alternative proposal here.

"We should have kept tariffs and capital restrictions on China skyhigh in the hopes it never became a competitive industrial producer, trapping hundreds of millions in subsistance poverty and raising the cost of everything."
This is also said about Europe's approach to China and I simply don't believe this is true. I was at conferences with senior US folk in the early 2010s and none thought China would become more democratic or liberal.

We thought we could compete.

Quick thread on the BBC and the political and societal significance of recent developments:

One of the main reasons the UK has historically been so much less polarised than the US, is that Britain has a shared source of information, consumed and trusted by most people regardless of their politics.

One of the reasons why Finland is the happiest country in the world is that the public broadcaster Yle sends a live feed of the first 8 weeks of a pack of puppies every fall. It’s already the fifth edition of ”Finland’s most therapeutic live feed”.

The reason Joyce's short story The Dead resonates so hard with Irish men and women is because Greta fell in love with a proper Irishman who didn't use an umbrella... whereas Gabriel probably owned two, not counting the one up his hole.
A mate who was a teenager in the wee north in the 70s was delighted to discover, when his family moved from Derry to Belfast that a guy could use an umbrella in Belfast without being called gay (unlike Derry where you just had to put up with the rain running down the neck of your denim jacket)

Watched the Manchurian Candidate last night, it was striking how 2 plot points are still relevant in this age. Create chaos in US political system and use the resuliting emergency powers to cement your rule, and the other one is having the candidate standing on stage covered in blood.

I'm obliged for the nod.

The "Penrose Effect" seems to be a real thing - hypothesised in the 1930s and re-tested in the last decade or so:

Where you reduce your inpatient psychiatric provision, you'll see a correlated rise within 10yrs in prisons of seriously mentally ill prisoners.

Written in the outpost of Rearcross, the letter is a bleak portrait of human misery worthy of Samuel Beckett
