Hey! I'm Steve. My podcast is The Infinite Inning, which combines baseball, history, politics, and culture. My books are Forging Genius, on the early career of Casey Stengel, and Baseball's Brief Lives, biographical essays. Between, there's been a whole lot of my beloved home, Baseball Prospectus.
Infinite Inning Episode 306: A pitcher goes through a windshield, toxic soup is eaten, a catcher suffers, the William Tell Overture is played on the harmonica but no strikeouts are recorded, and somehow this tells us something about where to go from here. www.baseballprospectus.com/podcasts/inf...
Infinite Inning 306: The Pitcher Who Refused to Go Home | Baseball Prospectus
After the week we’ve had, we’re all once again in the Infinite Inning, but is there a way out? Follow along the winding path as a Yankees ace puts his head through a windshield, toxic soup is eaten, a...

Came across a review of this novel while spelunking 1939-1940 newspapers. Oddly timed wish fulfillment then and struck me the same sort of way now... but someday!

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.

Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)
King (2030)

I think a lot of the anger this morning stems from a feeling that we did our part, but they did not do theirs. This is an oversimplification, but my dudes, no wonder people are like, “OK, let’s try the democratic socialist, then.”

I think tonight shows why “moderate to win elections” is a real risk

the big divide in the Dem caucus, as many have noted, has been less moderate vs progressive than fight versus don’t fight

but it’s not a coincidence that basically everyone in the “don’t fight” camp is a moderate

I keep seeing regular Americans taking more risks every day to fight tyranny, want, and cynicism than I see from the opposition party, and I imagine many of those regular Americans are asking themselves what the value proposition of such an opposition party is, really

Listening to these pathetic rationalizations from King, Hassan, Shaheen, whoever else they have queued up.

Disappointed that they're not having windup speech by Sen. Neville Chamberlain.

Senate Democrats had the power to do one thing: This shutdown. And this is what they did with it. Maybe this is some brilliant political calculus, in which case I'll happily eat my words. But right now, it feels like the beginning of the end of the party in its current form--and by its own hand.

Chuck Schumer is speaking. It's like watching one of those late-in-life Bob Hope TV specials.

Could SOMEONE explain what changed for the Sen Dems between Tuesday and today? The party won huge victories in opposition this mess. How the hell is THIS the moment to cave?
1. They're afraid of their own shadows?
2. They're afraid of secret paymasters who changed their minds because of... Mamdani?
My statement on the spending legislation and Republican healthcare crisis.

@booker.senate.gov What principle will this party actually stand up for?
When I was young, it was reflexive for smug nihilists to say there was no difference between the parties. I thought it a cop-out then and I still do... but the Democrats make it impossible to maintain any faith that it isn't true. There's a fascist party and the kayfabe opposition, a Potemkin party.
They couldn't cave before the elections last week, because then Dem voters would be angry with them and might not turn out. They're counting on folks forgetting about the surrender before primary season kicks in.

Democrats have to stop bailing out Republicans from facing the consequences of their own policies. And yeah, that means they have to stop sparing voters from experiencing what GOP government truly means.

Every time Dems step in, it only emboldens the GOP & they make it even worse the next time.
So Democrats get:

1. A CR that will prevent the GOP from facing the wrath of Americans for a shutdown over the holidays

2. A coupon for one (1) meaningless ACA vote that will fail

3. An end to the illegal RIF/SNAP moves that are already before the courts

Those all seem like wins for the GOP.

AOC should announce she's primarying Chuck Schumer ASAP. This is the time. Imagine the donations. I'd give them to her.

No joke, the raw sticker price of my father's final illness was easily in excess of $1 million.
Wait, are the GOP proposing a HSA to replace the ACA that you can use to purchase healthcare and not health insurance? That’s the dumbest possible solution what the hell.

if the Democrats are willing to accept this deal, in particular, i don't think a single Senator should make it through their primary. this just makes health inequity worse and lets Trump send out checks with his name on them!

That means your Democratic senators need to hear from you right now.

I'm hearing the same thing. Dems are nearing a surrender. I'm shocked. Largest protest in history + best election night in years + polling showing we're kicking their ass in public opinion. And now Dems may cave.

It ain't over til it's over, so please do call if you've got a Dem senator.
Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

I have called both of mine, and holy moly am I avoidant of making phonecalls. This is too important for that. Without us, the Democratic Party has the backbone of a chocolate eclair (and, yes, I am paraphrasing a Republican of ancient days--irony abounds).
Call the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and they will connect you with your senator's office.

If you're represented by one of the squishier centrists, be sure to make a call. Now.
