Alex Pretti was a scientist.
Alex Pretti, the man shot by ICE in Minneapolis, appears to have previously worked with the federal government at the VA.

There is a photo of him on the VA website, where he’s cited as part of a medical research team.

Congressman Aderholt from Alabama is the chair and he is apparently willing to help OMB here, adding report language (which is toothless) rather than including this in the law.

If you are from Alabama, please contact his office and your Senators and share your thoughts.

Not cool: Getting a "this 6 hour assignment is due on Monday" reminder from your society during a Holiday weekend. Either send the reminder before the Holiday or trust that it will be done by your deadline. Monday morning would be another automatable possibility.

When we push students to always choose the highest-ranked programs, we make it easier for those programs (or their faculty) to get away with treating students badly. Since that push sends the message that students should just be grateful to be there, no matter the cost.
There's some good advice in this thread, but I'm going to offer another take on #6 here:

The "best" (i.e. most prestigious) program you get into might not be the best fit for you, and you can still have a great career, even if you decide not to put status above everything else.
6) If you are offered the opportunity to do a PhD or a master at Oxbridge, Harvard or Yale don’t thing twice. Go!

7) Smart work exists in academia as well. Just look for it.

8) Paradoxically the pace of innovation at work can be slower in academia than other
businesses.
