Wow, great initiative!! Grant churn will only increase, so having funds to keep competitive projects running in the meantime is huge.

🧵Good news out of #NIH today.
(1) NIH is extending #ESI and #K99/R00 eligibility to accommodate researchers whose eligibility would have ended during the previous shutdown. Take a look at NOT-OD-26-020. If your ESI status would have ended in 2025, you get an automatic extension through 2026/03/31.

Congratulations to the lucky 19! But jeez, that is demoralizing.
CDMRP decisions dropped today. They funded 19 grants. Total. For the whole program. 1.9%. Not sure how anyone is supposed to survive this kind of environment.

The language in the bill restricts the amount of multiyear funding to the level is fiscal year 2025. The Senate bill limited it to that level in fiscal year 2024.

This is not good news...better than nothing, but thousands of lost projects.

One of my favorite Minneapolis traditions! After the cat tour, of course.
Please check in with your tap water temperature readings. Valid submissions must include your neighborhood and a photo of a thermometer under your tap.
I don't have hot water at my bathroom sink tap and let me tell you washing my hands with cold Minneapolis tap water right now is an invigorating experience.

Has @wedge.live done a water temp survey yet this winter?

The appropriations bill that includes NIH is being finalized.

The Senate bill includes a bipartisan amendment from Senators Capito (WV) and Baldwin (WI) limiting multi-year funding of grants.

The House version does not and OMB has issued a veto threat if the House includes such language.

Thrilled to start my lab at the @whiteheadinstitute.bsky.social @mit.edu and to join such a special community of creative and inspiring colleagues. The Sullivan Lab asks (1) how and (2) why infections make us sick, bridging immunology and neuroscience to understand host defense at the organism scale
“I want everyone in my lab to be exposed to many ways of thinking about biology,” says Whitehead Institute’s newest Member, immunologist Zuri Sullivan. “Creative science often comes from making connections across systems, and Whitehead is uniquely well-suited for that.”

Watching the second season of Culinary Class Wars, and I am highly entertained! But why on earth are the chefs preparing these big ass bites of food for the blindfolded tasting? I hope the "spoon-bearers" are well trained in the Heimlich maneuver🤣.

In retrospect, this is obvious. But I am still flabbergasted. How is this not being regulated?
1. LLM-generated code tries to run code from online software packages. Which is normal but
2. The packages don’t exist. Which would normally cause an error but
3. Nefarious people have made malware under the package names that LLMs make up most often. So
4. Now the LLM code points to malware.
LLMs hallucinating nonexistent software packages with plausible names leads to a new malware vulnerability: "slopsquatting."
