New paper! This is the marquee effort of my talented student Jessy Bowden, who identified a unique role for Src kinase signaling in microglia for promoting opioid signal transduction and pain relief in the spinal cord. Congrats Jessy! journals.lww.com/pain/fulltex...

Please please please help me get the word out about this. I’m afraid everyone is ignoring our emails. We’ve sent literally thousands and have <10 people enrolled. For reference, we need several hundred. So if you’re not a PI in one of these programs but know someone who is, pls send them this 🙏🙏🙏
Despite our grant being terminated, we are doing what we can with modest bridge funding. If you are a PI of a K24, TL1, R25, R38, or T32, you’re eligible! To learn more or enroll, check out our site!

Here’s some feedback from our last cohort:

These guys *desperately* need cognitive scientists as a part of these projects.
Demis Hassabis, the chief executive of Google DeepMind, says that “we’re quite close” to human-level artificial intelligence. After that, all bets are off. nyti.ms/45lteBF

I've been thinking a lot about the question of replication rates. Many people claim that ~50% replication rates represent a "crisis" but I've never seen that judgment justified (or even explained). What should the rate be? Why should be expect that rate? Why SHOULDN'T it be 50%?

And our IMSD T32 goes down. Guess we don’t want students from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds getting into science. Fuck these people. There is no hell hot enough for them.

Budget released today:
40% cut to NIH
50% cut to NSF
If enacted, this will destroy academic research in the United States. It will also have a major trickle down effect on the entire academic ecosystem

They aren't going to stop. Yes, there will be lawsuits and the institutions will likely get a TRO - but the administration knows this and they did it anyway. Because the goal is to destabilize and destroy, and the chaos helps them do that.
NEW: Starting May 5, NSF will implement an across-the-board 15% indirect cost rate (mirroring policies at DOE, NIH)

Also, NSF staff expect 341 additional terminations today, bringing the total number of terminations to ~1,380.

Fascist dictatorships do not stop; they have to be stopped.
"My research has found that extrajudicial detention is stopped by defeat in war, by the death of a demagogue, by independent judges, or by popular uprising — but rarely by the leader who started it."
I wrote for New York magazine about deportations to CECOT in El Salvador, which are bound up with a tradition of US extrajudicial actions in the Americas and further the long arc of concentration camps.

Abolish ICE
Please highlight this story.

ICE stormed into the wrong house, trashed the place, and made women/girls stand outside in the rain in their underwear. ICE also stole phones, laptops, and cash savings from the family, who moved to OKC two weeks ago.

In the past few months, ICE has shown itself to be completely lawless. Acting with no uniforms or ID, “deputizing” vigilante groups, acting against explicit judicial authority, knowingly detaining innocent people, and lying about all of it. Abolish ICE.
