Earlier this year, @kerrianne.bsky.social and I started a book club with friends, both to help encourage ourselves and others to read books that challenge us, but also, ideally, for community-driven difficult conversations that go with those books.
Are we watching a Psych marathon while charcuterie-ing to get psyched for 2026? Yes, yes we are.

Puppernugs made me ski 32k this morning. Including some on mountain bike trails that were not—nor have ever been—groomed for skiing. Just the absolute best last morning of the year, but we’re all so tired now.

Happy last day of 2025!

'Welfare ranching' is a term I learned when I first moved to Idaho. "Roughly two-thirds of all the livestock grazing on BLM acreage is controlled by just 10% of ranchers...On Forest Service land, the top 10% of permittees control more than 50% of grazing...Unchecked grazing followed."
The wealthy profit from public lands, and taxpayers pick up the tab - High Country News
Roughly two-thirds of grazing on Bureau of Land Management land is controlled by just 10% of permit holders.

I’ve been hit by cars six or seven times over several decades of running and cycling. But most drivers will (and have) told me to my face that pedestrians and cyclists are the problem—& not motorists unwilling to slow down and/or pay more attention to their surroundings.
I posted about not wanting cyclists to be hit by cars in response to a cyclist being hit by a car and Insta told me it “looks like branded content.”

Can confirm these workshops are special, with an emphasis on community and inclusivity well above and beyond what you’ll find elsewhere.
I may never be any good at tooting my horn, but I promise the writing workshops I lead are something special. Four different Q1 2026 offerings are live: www.creativefuelcollective.com/events-works...

Discounted pricing through year-end. Please sign up &/or share with a beloved writer in your life?

Didn’t hit my (admittedly) stupid stretch goal of 200k on the trainer for #Festive500 day one…but 137k will do for now.

Toya wanted to run this morning and then it started snowing so that was exciting and we put in a hard hour run. Then she got antsy this evening and it’s been snowing all day so we just put in an hour skijor around town and now I’m not sure who’s more tired.

But also this is why winter is the best.

$20 billion could end homelessness in the US

$40 billion could end hunger globally

Both would still only cost 3/4 of what Meta blew on Mark Zuckerberg’s obviously bad ideas because nobody would tell him they were stupid because he’s worth over $200 billion because he doesn’t pay his share of taxes
Mark Zuckerberg’s gamble on the "Metaverse" has lost his company more than $77 billion.

I am happy to pay $30 a year for USPS Prime, which delivers mail daily to my home
The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

City: We unanimously declare a climate emergency! We must make change no matter what the cost, humanity's survival depends on it!

Community: Can we put in a protected bike lane to get more people cycling.

City: No, we'll lose parking spots.

Hard to pick five, but:

Wolverines (including getting hissed at);
Grizzlies (including a good woof);
Wolves;
Cougars (stalked twice, lots of other less scary encounters);
Javelina (that was a fun standoff).

Also otters, moose, ermines, whales, black bears, bobcats, badgers…
Okay, I’m into this one. Introduce yourself with 5 animals you’ve seen in the wild.

Wolves (on the trail with me!) 😍
Otters (in the water with me!)
Humpback + grey whales
Moose (also in the water with me!)
Cougar

Also: Seals (in the water with me; sensing a theme here), bobcat, bears, and mink.
Introduce yourself with 5 animals you've seen in the wild:

Polar bear
Beluga whale
Moose
Wolf
Lynx

(it was hard to pick 5)

High Life was the drink of my choice for my college cross-country team…because we, too, believed in alternative fuels. (Also because it’s the champagne of beers, obviously.)

Did we make at least five times more food than we needed today? Yeah, probably. But it’s all very tasty, leftovers are delightful, and we’re good at sharing.

Did we just bust out our big travel cooler because there’s no way everything’s going to fit in the fridge? Yes, yes we did. 🤣

Turns out bourbon and preserved lemon are both great ways to level up the cranberry sauce.

I love this a lot. Community care is beautiful.
Someone bought a bunch of the turkeys and hams at our local grocery in town and told the manager to make them available for free to folks that need them. There’s a whole freezer case with a sign on it that just says “If you need one take one, if you don’t then leave it for someone else.”

I'll readily admit my bias, but I fully believe @kerrianne.bsky.social is one of the best facilitators I've ever met, which is one (of the many) reason(s) I'm so excited she's added two new focused writing workshops in coming weeks.

Last in-person nonprofit event (fundraising trail race) of the year was yesterday. It was delightful—we love our runners!—but also so cold and wet and there are not words for how tired we are today.

But these deli sandwiches are magic and will surely fix us.

Southern BBQ in [not the South] is a risky proposition but this place smells pretty damn legit. It’s rainy and gray but I’ll take all the brisket and wings and hot chicken and collards, please and thank you.

Coffee isn’t working at all today. Open to other (legal) suggestions. Just need to get through the end of the month and then things (theoretically) get more manageable.
If yesterday was a Sunday and required nine (?) cups of coffee, what is the appropriate dosage for today, a Monday?

Happy caffeinating to all who observe!

October is always madness—putting on multiple trail races, preparing the next year’s race calendar + registrations, permitting & fiscal reporting, getting ourselves ready for winter, etc—but also we got our first snow yesterday & there’s leftover chili, so all is right with the world.
