Earlier this year, @kerrianne.bsky.social and I started a book club with friends, both to help encourage ourselves and others to read books that challenge us, but also, ideally, for community-driven difficult conversations that go with those books.
Happy National Pickle Day to all with good taste

I'll readily admit my bias, but I fully believe @kerrianne.bsky.social is one of the best facilitators I've ever met, which is one (of the many) reason(s) I'm so excited she's added two new focused writing workshops in coming weeks.

Last in-person nonprofit event (fundraising trail race) of the year was yesterday. It was delightful—we love our runners!—but also so cold and wet and there are not words for how tired we are today.

But these deli sandwiches are magic and will surely fix us.

Southern BBQ in [not the South] is a risky proposition but this place smells pretty damn legit. It’s rainy and gray but I’ll take all the brisket and wings and hot chicken and collards, please and thank you.

Coffee isn’t working at all today. Open to other (legal) suggestions. Just need to get through the end of the month and then things (theoretically) get more manageable.
If yesterday was a Sunday and required nine (?) cups of coffee, what is the appropriate dosage for today, a Monday?

Happy caffeinating to all who observe!

October is always madness—putting on multiple trail races, preparing the next year’s race calendar + registrations, permitting & fiscal reporting, getting ourselves ready for winter, etc—but also we got our first snow yesterday & there’s leftover chili, so all is right with the world.

Yesterday as I rode by, a man screamed at me to ask “are you one of those trans terrorists?” (Maybe because I have long hair and wore bright colors, including rainbow socks?) I wish I’d been less flustered, had told him no such thing exists. Mostly I keep thinking about how broken some brains are.

Disbanding ICE and prosecuting everyone who led and worked for it is, in fact, the moderate position.
Breaking news from Des Moines: ICE has detained Dr. Ian Roberts, the superintendent of Iowa's largest school district.
The Des Moines Public Schools said "We have no confirmed information as to why Dr. Roberts is being detained or the next potential steps."

The superintendent they just kidnapped is a former Olympic athlete who runs footraces with the kids from his schools while wearing a maroon suit and a bowtie. This is quite simply about the people in power feeling threatened by Black excellence.
This is the man that ICE just detained. This isn't about catching criminals, it is about Ethnic cleansing www.iowapublicradio.org/news-from-np...

But if you call the police and say, "someone stole my bike off my porch," they will ask for serial numbers and pictures and then do nothing.
A 19-yo allegedly rode out of Walmart on a bike he allegedly stole, got stalked by a fucking cop drone and now "faces charges including shoplifting, possession of burglary tools and obstructing an officer, according to police."

Confirming: Time is still very much an imaginary construct and is only loosely connected to reality these days.
What day is it, even? What is time but an arbitrary construct meant to be broken?

Whether or not you support political violence won’t change where we’ve come to, nor where we’ve been for some time in this country. I am quite taken aback by how many people only invoke the term ‘political violence’ when it happens to a person with power. It’s political violence the other way too.

Reposting with alt text because this is really such a fantastic example of how bike infrastructure supports all types of micromobility. And also makes protesting a little easier too!

There are few things more satisfying than riding by someone* with puppernugs (grinning sweetly, always) in the bike trailer and watching their jaw drop.

* Or in this morning’s case, a man walking, two different couples walking their dogs, four kids waiting for the school bus.

Read this. AI is not sentient. It's not conscious. But it sure as fuck tries to be, and if you're a kid curious about killing yourself, you're fucked.
I got the complaint in the horrific OpenAI self harm case the the NY Times reported today

This is way way worse even than the NYT article makes it out to be

OpenAI absolutely deserves to be run out of business
