The flowers this summer have been brilliant. We've spent more time on bikes. Even as the rest of life has been messy, infuriating, a world persistently on fire, the trails have offered quiet morning respite first. I’m so, so grateful for that.

This summer hasn't been the summer we anticipated—I jacked up my knee in June and Toya's started showing all the miles on her hips—but it's still been delightful in the time we've spent out on our trails.

I first moved here 16 years ago today, moving cross-country via bicycle for a job in a place I'd never seen. The 2000-mile trip took fewer days than anticipated (even with many adventure detours!), so I got a few days exploring in the mountains, playing on the trails, falling in love with this area.

19 years ago today, one of my best friends at the time went missing on a climb in the Sawtooths, a climb we'd previously planned to do together. Can't help but think of how he'd laugh at my idea of dealing with our current heat by jumping on the trainer for a couple of hours.

So you run home instead where your pup can’t decide if she’s more glad you’re home or more mad that you did something without her, so snuggling with side eye it is.

Officially outdid myself: banana cranberry coffee kuchen with an almond cream cheese glaze (this is what happens when I’m not feeling particularly motivated to sit at my computer and have way too many hours of meetings later, apparently)

Celebrated Friday of a long week by making an apricot kuchen with lavender and galangal, with a cinnamon nutmeg cream cheese glaze, and it was exactly what I was envisioning. (No I did not measure anything.)

Completely comfortable in shorts, hoodie & sandals with the pup this morning, but was a bit surprised by the frost & fog—until we got home & I saw it was 27 degrees. I’m going to be in real trouble when it actually gets warm, aren’t I?

Ran 50+ miles yesterday morning (on messy & melting-out Nordic ski trails after minimal sleep) + was up half the night last night with a sick pup, so I’m either invincible or will crash hard later. Hoping for the former while suspecting the latter.

Skunk encounters that go well—especially in the dark—feel like they ought to come with an achievement badge. This morning included four separate skunks, each of which was spooked enough to raise its tail, but no getting sprayed. That alone counts as a run success!

Feels like our weeks are increasingly nonstop so trying to take a deep breath, remember all these ski adventures with puppernugs—more than 200km in March alone. Embracing joy allows us to push on.
