Historically, this kind of deflection shows up in propaganda too. Regimes have long used animal suffering or “neutral” topics to drown out outrage about human atrocities. It’s an anesthetic that can numb communities and societies into complicity or acceptance.

When a crisis is unfolding and human beings are being killed or harmed, if your first reaction is to express concern for the dogs, camels, or other animals, that’s not empathy. It is emotional avoidance masked as virtue and expressed publicly to reduce guilt or reject reality.

The more of them win, the faster this will become the only viable option for candidates. It's why I despise "lesser-evil-genocide-can't-be-a-red-line" voters and hold them solely responsible for the hell we're in. They fucked us.
Saw a campaign ad with a guy advertising his pro-Palestininan stance. That's progress.

People keep on bitching about Palestine protesters as if they (in the face of massive state violence) aren’t responsible for one of the greatest shifts in public opinion ever despite an entire media landscape set up to stop them

This week has really crushed my last dregs of hope that legacy news organizations can become capable of meeting the moment.

I think this is exactly correct. Legacy media outlets across the board have engaged in a unified effort to canonize Kirk in the public imagination. In doing so, they're essentially daring people to oppose it. And are wielding institutional power to punish anyone who vocalizes that opposition.
It’s a very scary place to be. It was bad enough when Fox News was the primary state media. We are seeing a massive realignment with the regime right now, some of it driven by billionaire acquisitions, but even more seemingly motivated by social and class solidarity + ideological overlap.

Local news channel running a segment on people losing their job for talking shit on Kirk is authoritarian propaganda.
It is meant to cut the root of dialogues that would bloom from pointing out the giant fractures we have as a society.

The irony of him being a free speech advocate is ignored.

Once again: turning up the temperature.

the past two days truly unlocked a new level of rage I didn’t realize I had in me. every awful person did the usual awful things they do, but dialed up to eleven and all at once so it felt like an avalanche
Just thinking about how the right made up an entirely fictional left wing character that resulted in so many bomb threats and the like and nobody will face consequences. But people on the left who accurately clocked the victim’s life work lost jobs.

The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly backed a two-state solution and the creation of an independent Palestinian state:

142 in favor, 12 abstained, 10 opposed, including the US, Hungary, and Argentina.
