Hi! First post :)

As an intro, my primary side-project is Tides of Revival, an first-person RPG set in a massive world that will play over decades and change with and without your actions.

I also run the Open World Gamedev newsletter and Discord, hosted over here: discord.gg/rzByav6Y7Z

Introducing hello-terrain/work! A small reactive work-graph library for typescript!

Organize compute with automatic dependency detection and aggressive memoization. Especially made for hot loops like your renderer update cycle~

I revisited my parallel IK system for the first time in awhile to make some ergonomic improvements & got perf improved by over 50% in some cases 🦾🤖

I still have some more improvements in mind, though, when I have some more time. Repo link below 👇

Just watched @anyaustin.bsky.social's video on how many trees there are in Skyrim. I actually estimated a year or two ago how many trees there will be in Tides of Revival (my Daggerfall-esque game I'm working on in my spare time) and got a rough estimate of 130 million trees :)

There is a pretty good way to evaluate if a producer is good:

Are they offloading work from the team and making sure they can focus on the development..

..or are they making the team do work *for the producer*, e.g. filling out jiras, reporting work, following rituals and procedures.
There are a lot of roles in game dev where someone bad in a role can do damage, but a bad producer can be so unbelievably damaging that it truly would be better to have no one in the role at all.

Just as good producers are force multipliers, bad producers are like throwing sand into a gearbox.
A good producer is absolutely an incredible force multiplier and allows the folks who are creating the actual artifacts to be more effective.

A producer beholden to methodology or who does not understand the needs of the game they're working, however, can do irreparable damage very easily.

I have this opinion that seems to go against every other game dev on social media:

Steam reviews are for the players, not for the developers.

And that's probably the way it ought to be. A review system tipped the other way would likely be worse for everyone, I think.

Having played through The Seance of Blake Manor and loved it, and bounced off of Blue Prince, I am really curious what made people dig BP so much. I really have to give it another shot and try and get past the "draw random rooms" part because there is apparently something amazing there.

I've kept exploring GPU-driven rendering and I've implemented a proof of concept for a GPU-based runtime object scattering system. I use it for grass but it can be used for all small objects that don't require physics interaction. 1/3

This was really nice!
for puzzle-likers following me (there’s got to be a bunch of you), I’ve really been enjoying The Daily Spell. little word jumbles with fun worldbuilding behind it (which recalling can help you out). there’s an archive; I would pay Money Dollars for more of these now that I’ve burned through most

Fun bug!

The camera was acting really wonky and it made no sense, it was looking some 10° off from where it ought to be looking...

Turns out I put the camera logic *on* the head, as in, it's the same entity. And I had scaled the entity by a factor of 0.5 to make it's shadow look less.. alien.

Been playing Seance at Black Manor. It's really good in all manner of ways, but to point one specific thing out: I think the one-minute-per-action mechanic works especially well, as simple as it is. Three days @ ~15h = lots of actions, I'm halfway and feeling stressed already! In a good way.

Cloud gaming in general wouldn't just be terrible in general, it would also be terrible specifically because it will be a nightmare for genres demanding low input, e.g. anything that uses a mouse pointer.

Had to look into what's going on in minnesota. JFC. It's genuinely horrific all the way from street level to international level...

This *has* to be a turning point.

This got in the game today. I should've waited with my yearly video! 😭
I've been working for a quite a while now on the GPU-driven renderer for Tides of Revival and it's really nice to finally see results like these 💚It wouldn't have been possible without the help of @srekel.net

I tried Sprite Illuminator for like 5 minutes, as a very quick test (I have used the program once before almost ten years ago) and, well the result isn't great but as a proof of concept..?

I just released my video about the engine (and game) I've been working on.

The engine is based on dynamic SDFs, and the video describes how it works and what it makes possible.

Link in the reply!

This is my first YouTube video and it took forever - please repost!

I'm almost done watching Absentia and it's been cool.

I really felt that if they are ever gonna make a new 24 (yes please) Stana Katic would be great as a new Jack Bauer. Her role in Absentia has many of the same qualities and she sells it.

Currently it looks like I'll have some unclaimed work time in Q1 2026. If anyone wants to snatch that up for help on their indie game, email me or something. I'm good at fixing performance issues, load times, gamefeel, writing debug tools, and more.

Island Burner is a toy that I made at Orcajam on Vancouver Island in 2013! It uses Conway's Game of Life to grow (or delete) and island and come up with interesting-looking Geography.
