This is horrible news. This program is a huge success, identifies brilliant scholars and gives them a transitional landing place that can help them land a tenure track job in the system. It’s a win for students, their programs, and all the schools in the system. Why end it?
A devastating set of decisions on the part of UC leadership to withdraw support from our nationally recognized postdoc program that prioritizes research excellence combined with addressing our university public service mission. www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty...
UC to Stop Funding Systemwide Postdoc Program
Established in 1984 to encourage women and minority Ph.D.s to pursue academia, the program has attracted right-wing criticism for prioritizing diverse candidates.

Trump justified the deployment of National Guard troops by calling the city "War ravaged," with an ICE office under siege. That's not what we found.

like I do one of the very least backbreaking forms of manual labor there is, and we still have people laid up on the regular because they twisted the wrong way while drilling overhead on a ladder
“Humans can just go get manual labor jobs if desk jobs are repaired with AI” is both not going to suffice to provide enough jobs and is also going to result in massive societal anger because manual labor jobs often *are terrible*, which is why people have worked hard to avoid them for generations.
Even if society provided the food/shelter level needs for everyone, humans also need to perform useful work just for basic fulfillment. The vast majority of people cannot sit around all day letting AI and robots do everything.

(The definition of “useful work” here is malleable but still essential)

My job is one of those jobs that people assume will be taken by AI-- almost all of the digital suites I use have been pushing me to write, schedule, whatever with AI for months now.

<looks around> I live in farm country and there STILL aren't manual labor jobs that I could do.

Anecdotal, but: recently found out that an acquaintance who got into welding ran into the same issue and became a pole dancer. He’s good at it and evidently makes decent money, but yeah, “learn a trade” isn’t a job guarantee anymore

I hate how disconnected people are from reality.

Those mountains you see here are artificial mountains created from the debris of asbestos mines in Quebec.

This is what industrialization removed.

It’s good.

People don't think of retail jobs as manual labor, but they are. I was in retail for decades and even when I was young being on my feet 8-10 hours a day was rough. Then add in unloading trucks, stocking shelves, climbing ladders, even folding clothes is tough when you do it for hours nonstop.

I just stepped backwards and OOPSY. 🤷‍♂️🙃

Now, before everyone loses their minds: OBVIOUSLY one attack is too many and it's heartbreaking for the victims.

But also...first responders and police were on the train in 8 MINUTES, the perpetrator was arrested, and no one was killed.

Maybe it's my American showing, but that's amazing.

In 2024, there were 1.6 BILLION rail journeys in the UK (passenger journeys).

The knife attack last week was horrendous but it doesn't mean we need to:
Turn train stations into airports
Carry pepper spray
Wear body armor
Kick out all immigrants.

Thanks for coming to my TED talks.
