How It Happens:
Disability & Poverty 🧵
1. You get sick &/ injured & cannot work. You don’t qualify for WSIB, so you go on STD, if you have it, & start pursuing treatment &/ rehab options as soon as you’re physically & mentally able to do so.

Poverty IS a choice.
Not by the individual, but by our society.
Every single step of the way, someone is trying to make sure you do not get access to something you need to survive.
You soon learn that they’d rather pay to keep you poor than help you live.

The reason why I'm so angry has a lot to do with the lives that will be lost — people are absolutely going to die as a direct result of Senate Democrats folding on health care. It also has a lot to do with the suffering that was endured — people were struggling to get by without food assistance. 🧵

After yesterday’s surrender, we’re launching the largest Democratic primary program that we’ve ever run.
We will not back any Senate primary candidate unless they call for Schumer to step down as Minority Leader.
If you’re as pissed as we are, join this campaign to rebuild the Democratic Party. 👇

Democratic leaders have failed us again. It's time to get new leaders.
After yet another capitulation by Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats, it's clear we need new leadership capable of mounting a serious opposition to Trump's authoritarian regime. We're launching our la...

Life is too short to give up the things that make you happy for some broken idea of what “adulthood” and “responsibility” look like. Keep your weird hobbies. Wear what you want to wear. You should never have to minimize yourself for the comfort of boring people. Be weird. Be cringe. Be happy.

I can't remember where I heard this, but I thought it was funny and accurate in my case:
"In your 20s, you care what other people think of you. In your 30s, you don't care what anyone thinks of you. In your 40s, you realize no one was ever thinking about you."

I don’t have a whole lot of advice for people younger than me but the earlier in life you stop worrying about what other people will think and just wholeheartedly enjoy the stuff you like the happier you’ll be
One thing people kind of tell you, but not really, about middle age:
One day you'll be like "oh [thing] looks fun but people will think I'm a loser" about a thing
And then you'll say. Wait a second.
Fuck 'em

The thing about Mamdani is that he’s a talented politician but not otherworldly or one in a billion, he’s just a competent guy with popular ideas who ran against an entitled piece of shit and to me it’s a lot more optimistic to imagine 1000 campaigns like his than to view him as a unique phenomenon

This could very well happen & is another one of those things ppl don’t understand about the past & how things were actually worse not better.
Let’s see if The Witch of November goes undetected next year.

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.
The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.
The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.
Why?
It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

Now all we need is for Joyce Carol Oates to post something about how Musk isn’t anywhere near as skilled, powerful, or brave enough as he’d have to be to publish the Epstein files on the World Wide Web.

The woman I was at the start of October 2020 ceased to exist by the end of that same month. She’s not coming back. She belongs to a completely different world. If she does exist, it is on some alternate timeline or in some parallel universe. But she doesn’t live here anymore.

I now understand why my Nonno never could talk about the war.
Broke down in tears answering our son’s questions about the start of the pandemic & how I became ill.
I don’t want to do that again.

I waited a day to say this bc I respected everyone's right to vent some anger, but *remember to focus on what you can do*. Whether it's defending your community, taking action around what you've been venting about, whatever — but don't let all of your energy get captured in the social media space.

Just get hit with an early snow storm a week after Halloween? Then you have the perfect opportunity to make some run hot chocolate concoctions!
Made my son an Aero Bar hot chocolate & myself a Crispy Crunch hot chocolate. Shaved the former & smashed the latter.
10/10 highly recommend.*

I initially read this as “having liquor savings” & was like, “very true, very wise”
But seriously heading into a recession flat broke due to disability after heading into the last one flat broke due to student loans is giving PTSD

if you were wondering how to prepare for a recession, the advice on the internet is “have a lot of liquid savings” and “don’t lose your job” 👍 very helpful, who could have predicted “having money saved” and “having income” would help a situation
