It has only occurred to me now, in this moment, in my 44th year on this Earth, that a 'one-horse open sleigh' is not in fact pulled by a reindeer as I have always pictured it to be.

I am glad tomorrow the last working day of the year for me. The fucks pantry is bare and any sense of resilience is hanging by a spider's arse-rope.

My first ever job was at a supermarket. I worked with an older gentlemen who must’ve been in his late 70s and while I can’t name the supermarket due to an ongoing legal dispute the guy must be dead by now so I’ll just use his real name: Barnaby.

There’s an Arabic version of “every cloud has a silver lining” that translates to “no cows, no feeding them at dawn.” A Scots version is “today’s rain is tomorrow’s whisky.” And a Romanian phrase for looking on the bright side is un șut în fund, un pas înainte, or “a kick in the ass, a step forward”

Waikato Regional Council has a good case to extend the trial of Te Huia—a bonus is it pushes the decision to keep/cancel it until after the 2026 election and hopefully a new govt. I can't see the current govt retaining the train

(should've been introduced on permanent basis, not a trial, buuut...)
NZTA intends considering this matter at its February 2026 board meeting.

Should the NZTA Board decide either to not support an extension of the trial or to reduce its funding to 51%, the 2026/27 Annual Plan process would include full public engagement on the future of the service.

Enjoying seeing the #SecretSantaAoNZ posts this morning. I opted not to take part this year because Too Much Stuff Going On but I still get to feel the little mood lift that the giving and receiving and sharing brings. Nice work, everyone!

It's the same for paramedics. It's insane that we view firefighting as a volunteer career still, and ambulance services as charities. These should be fully funded government services.

Steve isn’t here anymore, but he always posted this picture on Hanukkah so I thought we could carry on his tradition and remember him.
Happy Hanukkah to our friends who celebrate. Rachel Posner, a rabbi’s wife in Kiel, Germany, took this photograph in 1931 -- a potent reminder that fascism must be fought in every generation, even if it's wrapped in an American flag and a red hat.
