Waikato Regional Council has a good case to extend the trial of Te Huia—a bonus is it pushes the decision to keep/cancel it until after the 2026 election and hopefully a new govt. I can't see the current govt retaining the train

Should the NZTA Board decide either to not support an extension of the trial or to reduce its funding to 51%, the 2026/27 Annual Plan process would include full public engagement on the future of the service.

It's the same for paramedics. It's insane that we view firefighting as a volunteer career still, and ambulance services as charities. These should be fully funded government services.
