My theory of the moment: The extraordinary courage of ordinary people in places like Minneapolis is reawakening us to our social and economic ties to immigrants. It's making "love thy neighbor" cool again. That's the ultimate antidote to MAGA hate.

Thoughts on this:

We've joked for years about how posting isn't activism but now that the government is a gang of social media-obsessed fascists it actually is
Posting about ICE on Instagram is now enough to get you an “administrative subpoena.” 👀

contrast this to a year ago when there was very little anti-Trump messaging in public from anyone in a position of power or influence

this is an big change and it does indicate his power over the elites - who have been much more deferential than society at large - is starting to wane
I know people like to dunk on wearing tiny "ICE OUT" pins, but I think they represent a really important culture shift. Even people who are very conscious about their image and expected to perform in a palatable way are wearing them in very public places.
New York Fashion Week Joins the “ICE OUT” Movement: “It Changes Hearts and Minds”
From designers to front-row regulars, the industry is rallying behind a growing campaign against ICE. Organizers and participants tell ‘Marie Claire’ why this moment matters.

They want to scare people out of posting ICE-critical content, because they know these posts are turning even their supporters against them. But the better option is to take a page out of their playbook and flood the zone.

from the perspective of someone who might want to be president, the best time to run for the white house is now, not later. so if AOC is thinking about it — if the white house is her ambition — then her best bet is to throw her hat in the ring
You Know What? Maybe the Time Is Right for an AOC Presidential Bid
She’s only 36, and there’s a good argument that she should run for Senate and bide her time. But she also could be a formidable White House candidate.

When you see all the people labelled rude, essentially shadowbanning them under the default settings, remember that literally *every single* rude label has been manually applied by a mod. All of them.

It's not a filter grepping on cusses, it's someone physically clicking a button.
By their own numbers, almost 50% of what Bluesky moderation gets up to is just manually labeling replies as rude. 👍

if you haven't yet, go into settings to your labelers and then off the "rude" setting. its on and set to "hide posts" by default. just turn it the fuck off

its a label that a human moderator slaps on someone simply for not liking them and that's not a joke! they do not do it to crypto ppl ever
great, my bluesky account is being hidden now

“Valve’s refusal to moderate any of this is making Steam reviews and forums the battleground for some kind of culture war, and is making them unsafe for marginalised people and regular gamers trying to simply enjoy the game they bought.” (quote from a dev in the article. this is well said imo.)

Honestly, AI slop PRs are becoming increasingly draining and demoralizing for #Godot maintainers.

If you want to help, more funding so we can pay more maintainers to deal with the slop (on top of everything we do already) is the only viable solution I can think of:

fund.godotengine.org
Godot's GitHub has increasingly many pull requests generated by LLMs and it's a MASSIVE time waster for reviewers – especially if people don't disclose it. Changes often make no sense, descriptions are extremely verbose, users don't understand their own changes… It's a total shitshow. #godotengine

If you only read one thing today, let it be this. ICE is not in retreat. What we saw in Minnesota is going to spread everywhere. Get ready, friends. Take a training. Connect with your neighbors. Find out which groups are already doing prep work and volunteer. Lock arms and love on your community.

Anyways yeah the issue isn't even fighting games as products (though some have been fuckin miserable), it's just that nothing lasts forever and I don't think any fighting game could ever meet obscene corporate demands for "success" without at least 3-4 years of support and a little luck

You would honestly have an easier time getting people into fighting games if you improved things that AREN'T the games, like the material conditions of the world we live in, and general improvements to mental health.

Bullying discord is a public good, make sure to do it loudly, publicly, make their brand so rotten that they are even afraid of going public because their stocks would tank out of bad reputation.
Discord advises UK users that they "may be part of an experiment" where instead of their age verification data never leaving their phone, it will now actually leave their phone

New from me. A years-long battle with Valve's ineffective moderation rumbles on as bigotry and harassment is given persistent passes on Steam. It leads to lengthy, sometimes traumatic, processes to get content that violates Steam's own guidelines removed – if it ever is. In @theguardian.com.

Bluesky was literally meant to be a cryptobro social network for grifters, LinkedIn sludge, and libertarians who know way too much about age of consent laws.

Jack Dorsey *left* when instead of weird and off-putting cryptonerds, trans people started hanging out here.
Can you think of examples where people use technologies differently from what the developers intended, whether unintentionally or as an act of resistance?
