The irony in this award is agonising. He did, indeed, “help to shape the university sector as we know it today.” As noted, he oversaw the introduction of a new fee regime with no provision for inflation, which is why, 15 years on, the sector is bankrupt.

I learnt two interesting things about AOL today. Their dial up internet still had around 100k users until they turned it off a few weeks ago. I also didn’t know it evolved from an older Apple service called AppleLink.
