Slave Zero's level design is almost certainly touched by GunHed given the VHS circulating at the time in colleges and universities, so this makes sense!
Gunhed was hugely influencial upon lots and lots of 1990's science fiction projects, especially games!

Working artists/designers didn't "prepare for" the airbrush or digital typesetting or Quark or whatever. You evaluate whether it's a thing and learn it, or not. "Do it ASAP so my boss can make a buck even though it doesn't work yet" has always been fraught
