I should also mention: the guy at the thrift store who marked it down to $30 said he restores every old phonograph they get ("I can't let them pass me by") and offered me a mauve/tan, space-age looking Singer in a mint condition midcentury console table that had just arrived

I’ve been thinking about the amazing dual realities of that show, it was both a meticulously choreographed performance and REAL, people really got married, Toñita was really handing out drinks, a barber was really cutting hair in the barber shop. Both a beautiful political action & performance art.

I suppose I also take this personally bc attacks on craftivism land poorly with me as a Native person. Beading together, making regalia, sewing in groups — this is at the heart of how the women on my reservation gather to do healing work, political ed, and mutual aid. This has long been true.

sometimes I think people call craftivism "performative" because if they use the actual word "visible" it's clear that craftivism is good
People have worn out "performative." We often perform things that are real, you know. Posting is a kind of performance of one's politics. Performative doesn't actually mean "fake" or "empty," it just gets deployed that way. We actually need performance. Case in point: last night's performance.
