INTE ODUCTION In 2002, having decided to bring the late magazine "Metal Hurlant" back to life. Fabrice Giger, the publisher of Humanoids suggested I create a character that would personify the monthly magazine. I was to tell a story for each issue in 10 pages at most, Up until then, I had specialized in four-, six-, eight- or ten-volume series Before starting each of these sagas, I would meet several times with an artist whose previous works I admired. I would ask him questions to figure out his personality, his tastes, the archetypes that peopled his unconscious, his level of • consciousness, his religious or political ideas, the imaginary worlds he longed to explore. From all this data I created adventures that would take place in a universe that the artist could consider his own, and characters with whom he could identify Mœbius had a bit of John Difool in him, just as François Boucq was the Bouncer; Juan Gimenez the Metabaron and Bess the White Lama. Also, to write these long stories I iust imagined their beginning, then, as years went by, I unspooled the yarn until the story reached a resolution that surprised even me. Little by little, the characters freed themselves of me and forced me to transcribe their dictation. I became ever-more apt at confronting my heroes with apparently insoluble problems. For example: castrated bv a wila one of the ancestors of the Metabaron iS beast. Despite such mutilation, he is supposed to beget a son. How? I admit that I woula often get down on my knees and pray to my unconscious. "I can't imagine my way out. the solution! " After a while Please, give me the solution would pop into my mind. I do mean "pop, " because I wasn crafting it. I just contented myselfto receive it fully formed in my mind In those privileged moments, my heart would beat faster and with an exquisite joY I would exclaim: "Thank you, my unconscious! Thank you for this gift!" But for this new proiect F abrice Giger brought to me, I couldn't do any of that. I had to, in a way, switch from writing novels to writing short stories. All writers know that it is much easier to write a thousand-page book than a short story Victor Hugo even once apologized to a friend for having written a long letter because he hadn'`t had the time to write a shorter one... In ten pages or less, one must present the schematics of a conflict, and quickly resolve it in a clear yet surprising way. The challenge appealed to me: to compress my immense imagination-I say this with a cynical absence of modesty- in order to extract from it short stories But the challenge intensified when I learned that Fabrice, in the magazine, wanted to give a lucky break to young, talented artists, most of whom lived in the United States. Given that I was based in Paris, I had to trust him: he would choose them and send me some information about them via e-mail. For example: one such artist is really good when it comes to drawing characters, but not so at ease with landscapes-hence I invented a flat stone planet where, the only structure was a temple in construction... Another artist does not know how to draw humans but specializes n machines-here I invented a story that took place in a world peopled by robots... Yet another draws everything very well, but he doesn't know how to make his characters express feelings--to push him beyond his limits, I invented a story where the most important thing would be for the hero to feel sorrow... This is how these short tales, each written in a different style, came to chronicle the journey of an asteroid hurling across the sky: the Screaming Planet. It crosses the skies of countless worlds, moaning its endless complaint and spreading its anguish to each and every world: "Why must what happens happen? So this week I have been at the doctor getting a Biopsy on a suspicious lump on my face. It has once again come back as BASAL CELL. Its pretty much border to the same area as I have gone through before. It isnt a topical Cancer now. So they really cant say how large it may be. Thats my fear here. It is close to my eye and thats my biggest concern. First I have to meet with MOHs surgeon Dr Streams, the same as last time 9 years ago, but perhaps the most comforting is that my surgeon from last time is also still there. I breathed a sigh of relief knowing Dr Aimes is still there. She really helped me last time in recovery and rebuilding. This time Ill be able to give her a BASAL. Im not sure exactly when my surgery will be, but it will be soon. Im praying it hasnt extended into areas that will require me to have a forehead flap as last time. That was extremely challenging. Im sure you can understand how scary this can be. I have a massive needle phobia, and all the work is in my face. Its honestly my biggest challenge Ive faced now 2 times previously. Id like to thank you guys for always being so supportive here. This community here has really been something that truly makes me happy. I need this week to prepare my mind and get a attack plan going. Ill also keep you posted on things. I hope to be back next week and take it day by day.
