Re: Gavin Newsom 2028. The question is whether we are going to reboot this country to stop the enshittification cycle we’ve been in for 46 years or not. I think Newsom could get elected in 2028 (if elections are free and fair) as, once again, lesser of two evils. But I think he will be more…1/
i think nominating Gavin Newsom will lose the White House again for Democrats. The party's left flank will stay home again because he's an empty corporate shell. The age of Democrats punching left to appeal to the center is over and it's now a matter of if the party as a whole realizes that or not.

Maybe this explains why people in my feed seem to be Mad With Each Other a lot. I'm mad with the downfall of democracy and fascism; someone having a tantrum about what Vaporback Smiter said about Shamesty Smirk is Not Interesting.
this website is a machine for surfacing extremely rarefied internecine beef from toxic friend groups and you need to be able to recognize when it's happening and avert your gaze

Watching the rollout of AI feels like what it might have felt like to watch the widespread adoption of cars in the early 20th century. Having the foresight to think: we don't have to live like this; we shouldn't live like this; in 100 years we'll be desperately trying to stop living like this.

If you can't get behind AOC 2028 right now then you're a fascist and are the cause of the destruction of this country and you aren't a team player and not even really a Democrat and and you're to blame for where we find ourselves right now and boy I feel better knowing I'm not to blame for anything.

Sometimes I feel like the entire political theater and culture is being driven by purity/pollution dynamics, where aspirationally pure people destroy everyone and everything they deem 'impure', but also indulge in impurity to satisfy a 'being bad' fetish. It is so, so banal. Billions of people...1/

This is a great observation/analogy - and I'd just mildly extend it to radiation in general. My mom used to tell me about going to the shoe store when she was a kid (in the 30s-40s) and they had an x-ray machine so that you could see how your shoes fit - irradiating kids' feet over and over again.
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

Just a reminder that if we redistributed Elon Musk's wealth to every single person in the U.S., each person (349,000,000 of us) would receive ~$2400.

Look, if your job is requiring you to use AI, I wouldn’t insist you stage a walkout and refuse, because you might need that job. But *choosing* to use AI is deeply dangerous, and you don’t need to chat w a fucking chatbot.

Despite the continual drumbeat of centrists blaming progressives/left for abstention in 2024 (and doing the “enjoy the camps” thing re: 2028) the picture of who non-voters were is not clear cut. In fact, data shows that many of them held more conservative positions (such as anti-abortion.) 1/

100%. I cannot fathom how AI fetishists cannot see the writing on the wall, that the only reason billionaires are pumping billions into this project is to put all knowledge workers out of a job. It takes insane levels of hubris to think that you're so smart and special that you'll be the one spared.
Hey, what do you think will happen to the housing market when tens of millions of upper middle class white collar workers lose their high paying jobs and can no longer afford to pay their mortgages anymore?

Greek philosophy has so many fine-grained terms for societal and personal experience. Amathia is an amazing one, describing a condition endemic in our society: the stupidity of otherwise intelligent people who refuse to allow data/facts to sway their fervent beliefs. IMO, the concept of faith…1/

Currently being fucked over by the ACA; to be clear, I fucked up and the ACA rules are ensuring I remain fucked. I cannot stress enough how shitty a compromise, half-assed solution to healthcare malfunction in this country the ACA was/is. It's a system designed to ensure the insurers remain wealthy.

I wish liberal moderates would understand that the existence of a strong left wing is what gives you the negotiating room to create change. Sure, distance yourself from the 'excesses' of the left in a negotiation if it helps you move the other side. But too many centristy people think..1/
February 6, 2026 at 1:08 PM
I think some of the problem with the supposedly centrist worldview can be illustrated by the fact that they easily malign Bluesky as a far-left social media platform, but cannot see (refuse to see) Twitter as a far-right social media platform (and continue to use it.)

I think the core of Trump's support aren't poor white folks or billionaires, but middle-aged white dude owners of 'blue-collar' companies (car dealer, plumbing co, waste mgmt, fast-food franchises) who make $250K a year, have a boat and golf, and align with billionaires/bosses more than workers.

Have the Radical Centrist Activists started demanding fealty to Gavin Newsom again?
February 3, 2026 at 10:12 PM
I dislike “transphobe”, because it seems to center the supposed fear of those who hate us, and suggest that they could be less afraid if they knew us. Not how hate works. I know they’re now calling trans women “TIMs” (Trans-Identifying Males) - might I suggest Feminist-Identifying Bigots? (FIBs)
February 3, 2026 at 8:23 PM
I think this is an excellent point. I think we need to start talking about centrists as "Reactionary Centrist Activists" or similar. Anything to puncture the self-satisfied sense that they are the only Reasonable people.
Matt Yglesias is an activist and we need to start calling him one.

Trans ppl get told all the time we have to vote for 2nd class citizenship if Dems nominate someone who views trans folks as 2nd class, since the alternative is voting for trans genocide or doing nothing to impede that genocide.

This is, of course, wrong and stupid. From the Boston Review:

You ever have those days where you keep knocking things over, and the thing you knock over knocks over two more things which knocks down 5 other things on the way down, one of which explodes rice all over the floor and think that life is just one long struggle against gravity?

Watching "The Keepers" on Netflix, and just absolutely disgusted at the powerful, the Catholic, the rich, evidently overwhelmingly afflicted with a pandemic of pedophilia in this country. Is it any wonder that these ~people want to persecute LGBTQ people and claim that we are the predators?
