American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

I was a biology and English double major in college, and I feel I am thus qualified to state unequivocally that pronouns are not biological.

It's lovely to read someone who can write such an eloquent, incisive and clear-eyed appraisal of the vapidity of the 'journalism' being done at the New York Times. Like the United States, its good reputation is solely based on past glory, not its shambolic present-day work.

Dating websites are very, very, very disappointing as a 50-something trans woman with self-respect.

You have ardent fans in the U.S., Zack.
A lovely guy who can think on this feet.

Also - do penguins have knees???

This is why Dems still trying to play nice with Rs is fruitless. They’ve been intentionally undermining democracy for at least 25 years. Whenever Dems take power again, they cannot go back to “our hands are tied!”
Only time besides Obama‘s
election that I saved multiple newspapers for several days around the event. A horrifying and overt corrupt action to prevent Gore being seated. Bush stole the election in plain sight and anybody who was adult at the time saying otherwise is playing right in your face

I cannot stress enough that using AI is training it for its raison d’etre, which is to eliminate the need for company owners to pay workers to do or make anything. This is why they are investing billions. This is why they don’t care if it tells people to kill themselves. We are all expendable.

One thing the NYC mayoral race underscored for me is how easily the phrase "I don't feel safe" can be weaponized. It's an argument I would hesitate ever to use again, even for a good cause. I hope we can all agree that we have the right to BE safe. Maybe we should leave it at that.

It's nosurprise at this point that the SCOTUS 6 are ethically and morally bankrupt. It seems they have no sense of the law as anything impartial; rather, they see themselves as Special, appointed wielders of power to rubber stamp the law when they agree, or create law where it doesn't exist. 1/

With the latest weasely SCOTUS ruling shadow docket ruling denying that trans people are discriminated against, I'm wondering whether State will begin invalidating already issued passports. They are petty and dickish enough to do it.
November 6, 2025 at 8:36 PM
Welp, back to the bad news.
NEW: On the shadow docket, the Supreme Court lets Trump resume misgendering trans Americans on their passports, claiming "the government is merely attesting to a historical fact without subjecting anyone to differential treatment." All three liberals dissent. www.documentcloud.org/documents/26...

I think the fact that a huge number of people across the entire country were absolutely stoked and cheering in bars about the Democratic Socialist who won the NYC mayoral election *should* cause the Democrats to try to harness that energy rather than Schumering/DNCing/Third Waying it.

There’s no reason ever again for any Democrat to suggest moderating on trans rights. There was never a moral reason but now there’s no political reason either.

Somebody tell Gavin Newsom and Pete Buttigieg. it’s joe-ver.

Centrists' determination to not question their worldview and their absolute conviction that the worst thing one can be is a leftist, must always tack right, etc. is on full display now. They cannot conceive that a left wing candidate could be popular except through unreproduceable circumstances. 1/

"He stayed away from identity politics"

Not even 12 hours and people already rewriting history. 🙄
Zohran Mamdani honors trailblazing Hispanic transgender activist Sylvia Rivera in a new campaign ad in which he pledges to “deploy hundreds of lawyers” to fight Donald Trump’s anti-trans attacks and to make NYC an LGBTQ+ sanctuary city: “In a time of darkness, New York must be the light.” 🕯️

Throwing LGBTQ people under the bus has historical roots.
November 5, 2025 at 12:06 AM
This is just a reminder that the Dem consultants saying we have to abandon all left-wing positions in order to win were the same people talking endlessly about "demographic inevitability" after Obama was elected rather than minding the store while Rs planned to destroy the country.
November 4, 2025 at 7:28 PM
Third Way is not center-left. The kind description for them would be reactionary centrist. The unkind would be cowardly accommodationists. Your purple politics has lost us so many winnable elections.
November 4, 2025 at 6:03 PM
Centrists don't understand in their "focus on kitchen table issues" that they don't have to sacrifice trans people. Mamdani, Polanski and others show how to do it. They affirm trans people, imply the interlocutor is weird for focusing on it, and then talk about affordability in a seamless way. 1/

I feel like a lot of people in American cities are in a constant tantrum over not being able to have the "Does Not Exist."
My semi-regular reminder of a really important reality about cities, density, services and taxes.

My gender is woman, but my philosophy is non-binary. I find something so crass and juvenile about the exercise of labeling people. Nothing against anyone who wants to self-describe, but it often feels like labels are little prisons for people to include or exclude.
