i think nominating Gavin Newsom will lose the White House again for Democrats. The party's left flank will stay home again because he's an empty corporate shell. The age of Democrats punching left to appeal to the center is over and it's now a matter of if the party as a whole realizes that or not.

This is a great observation/analogy - and I'd just mildly extend it to radiation in general. My mom used to tell me about going to the shoe store when she was a kid (in the 30s-40s) and they had an x-ray machine so that you could see how your shoes fit - irradiating kids' feet over and over again.
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

I cannot stress enough how shitty a compromise, half-assed solution to healthcare malfunction in this country the ACA was/is. It's a system designed to ensure the insurers remain wealthy.

I think some of the problem with the supposedly centrist worldview can be illustrated by the fact that they easily malign Bluesky as a far-left social media platform, but cannot see (refuse to see) Twitter as a far-right social media platform (and continue to use it.)
I think the core of Trump's support aren't poor white folks or billionaires, but middle-aged white dude owners of 'blue-collar' companies (car dealer, plumbing co, waste mgmt, fast-food franchises) who make $250K a year, have a boat and golf, and align with billionaires/bosses more than workers.

I think this is an excellent point. I think we need to start talking about centrists as "Reactionary Centrist Activists" or similar. Anything to puncture the self-satisfied sense that they are the only Reasonable people.
Matt Yglesias is an activist and we need to start calling him one.

Watching "The Keepers" on Netflix, and just absolutely disgusted at the powerful, the Catholic, the rich, evidently overwhelmingly afflicted with a pandemic of pedophilia in this country. Is it any wonder that these ~people want to persecute LGBTQ people and claim that we are the predators?
